Strategy Chat: The Kron / Goblin Overkill

The Kron Goblin Overkill.png

There are some combinations which just seem to go together; tomato and cheese, bread and butter, and the other obvious one, KRON and GOBLIN PYSCHIC. In this blog, I want to explore this powerful combination, as it is a match made, well and truly, in an under-the-sea heaven!

To do this, let's start with GOBLIN PYSCHIC:

image.png

On it's surface, this is a pretty average card. The biggest issue with it, is that is costs 6 MANA. This makes this guy quite expensive when he only delivers a +2 Magic damage punch, and with low speed (+1) he certainly won't be changing the battle earlier in the battle. 4 health also makes him fairly squishy.

The key part of this card is his HEAL ability; while he cannot do significant damage to an opponent, he can make that up by healing the tank, and frustrating your opponent - particularly if it means they can't get your tank down! At higher levels, like my GOLD FOIL Level 4 card, this guy also gets AFFLICTION. This is an epic good skill, it means that an opponent who is AFFLICTED cannot be healed. This skill is one that can change battle outcomes.

So the verdict?

This guy is amazing!

My card is Level 4, and it is leveled so I can make use of it in in my Silver league battles, but I did want to check out it's complete stats, just for some perspective. I do note, however, that I intend to pair this guy with Kron, and in turn, a Sacred Llama Summoner (Lvl 1) which will limit by Goblin to Level 3, and mean he won't have the affliction skill.

In the end, I was incredibly impressed. This is one solid card, it carries the +2 magic throughout the table, and it's HEAL is supported by a variety of support skills as he gets stronger. At present, I have this card Level 4. I can't play a Level 7 yet as I'm not in GOLD LEAGUE - but it gets pretty awesome, having the ability to SILENCE an opponent's magic attacks.

To celebrate this card, I decided to check out how much these cards sell for:

It seemed like a pretty awesome buy, so I thought I'd make another cheeky purchase to increase my CARD POWER. Not a bad price for a gold foil, eh?

The next consideration is how to make this GOBLIN PYSCHIC into a very, very strong strategic weapon - which, as a support card, is to be paired with Kron/Llama and frustrate the crap out of my opponents!

image.png

You'll notice also that KRON THE UNDYING has HEAL. The strategy will then be to put Kron as my last card, and have him continually heal himself, while GOBLIN PSYCHIC will work on HEALING the tank. Meanwhile, their combined +5 Magic Damage will be an amazing weapon to knock out opponents quickly.

It brings me to my final piece of the strategic puzzle. That puzzle is SCARRED LLAMA MAGE:

image.png

With this SCARRED LLAMA MAGE, you'll notice that all of my cards get +2 Health, which is amazing, as both Kron and Goblin are all about HEALING themselves and the tank. The extra health will contribute to my opponents frustration. The LAST STAND skill is also amazing, as the plan will be that, if needed, KRON will receive the skill - pushing his attack to +5 Magic and +6 Healing each round. That means he'll knock out opponent's cards VERY quickly, and be hard to kill given his high level of damage.

So let's get to the KRON + GOBLIN PSYCHIC OVERKILL Battle:

image.png

This ruleset is very interesting, and not one you see often. The TARGET PRACTICE rulset will mean all my accounts will have SNIPE - this means that the intention will be to take out my opponents' backline, and in turn, he can take out mine. In truth, when I put my team together, I didn't pay attention to this rule. Instead, I focused on the 'NO MELEE MONSTERS' ruleset. For me then, it was clear I wanted to play magic and so I pushed ahead with the EARTH splinter. This worked for Kron/Psychic, obviously because neither is melee damage.

To help me out, I put my FAILED SUMMONER out the front. I thought that my opponent, unable to play melee, would likely play magic too, based on his previous battles. I wanted the FAILED SUMMONER out front to reflect the magic back and to damage his backrow early. This card would be supported by the GOBLIN's HEAL, and at 2 mana, it's super cheap. You can see that by pairing this card with SCARRED LLAMA MAGE, that he moves from 4 health to 6 health, not too bad a defensive strategy, eh?

My Backrow:

image.png

Looking at my backrow, you'll note that the high mana allowance gave me the opportunity to play an expensive summoner, with multiple cards with high costs.
44 Mana:
2 for Failed Summoner
10 for Cornealus
4 for Mycella Queen
6 for Goblin Psychic
5 for Mushroom
10 for Kron
7 for Scarred Llama Mage

There are a few parts of this backline that I like.
The first is Cornealus (The eye)
I've been detailing in this past that I want to frustrate my opponent with healing. Kron HEALS himself, Goblin Heals the tank. I put Cornealus in because he HEALS himself too. I figured that when my failed summoner died, that by having Cornealus in second, that between his heal and Gobin's heal, that he would have some longevity.

That said, he also has some handy attack, the +2 arrow attack means that he will certainly be impacting my opponent's card - but in truth, this battle doesn't really on it. Odds are, Cornealus will be taking out the opponent's armour, whereas my other four attacking cards will be going straight to health and ignore armour.

The Mushroom Seer is the second key part of the line-up. You see, I made the assumption that my opponent would be using MAGIC attack, in this assumption, the mushroom would have reduced my opponent's magic attack by 1, and make him incredibly vulnerable - with a lowered attack, against a team which would be prioritizing healing.

This is how the battle gets underways:

image.png

From the start, I realised I had overlooked the SNIPE skillset; however, by placing Cornealus second, that's where the SNIPE hits were going - having a Mycella +2 armour shield, and the 14 health, meant that this card was going to be difficult to kill. In contrast, all of my opponent's card had very low health in the backline, so I was instantly confident that this battle was likely going to go my way and deliver the OVERKILL I had envisaged.

Ok, let's have a look at how the battle went, have a look at this video. Trust me, it's short!

As you can see, this battle was not close, and I took a very quick advantage. The hardest part of this battle was trying to take down my opponent's Cornealus, which borrowed my trick of frustrating me with his HEAL skill.

At the end of round 1, you can see, my Cornealus is still alive and he has used his HUGE health, HEAL and +2 shield to stay alive. My biggest threat in this battle was my opponents' speed meant that he got all his hits in, prior to my attacks starting to take his cards out.

image.png

Then, as Round 3 gets underway, the battle is drawing to it's climax. My Kron will get the first hit in this battle to knock out his last attacker on the back-line. When that guy falls, his Cornealus will be able to keep healing himself each round, but he will not have any attack left, with Arrows not being able to attack from the tank position. Now, I'm going to hit him with +7 Magic each round, while his healing is +4. It will take a few rounds to drop him, but the inevitable will come!

So what's the verdict?

  • Everyone loves being confident going into a battle. By playing the Goblin/Kron strategy, I was essentially playing a Kron/Llama battle, but by drawing the battle out, I was intending on doing a lot of damage to my opponent prior to Kron taking on LAST STAND.
  • In the end, I won by a significant margin. Would I play this line-up again in the future? Absolutely! Would I expect another overkill from playing this line up again? Absolutely! I'm not too sure what line-up would have any hope, unless they too, were playing a similar Kron/Llama line-up. Perhaps Obsidian as a summoner may have made this more aggressive, that might be my only other consideration.
