The New Player Experience - Splinterlands

preview(1).jpg

How are you doing SplinterMates? Are you ready for my first ever Splinterlands The People´s Guilds Challenge?

The challenge theme proposed by @thepeoplesguild for this week is as follows:

This week's #TPGChallenge calls on the community to explore and identify key areas in the player experience—especially for new players—that could benefit from further development and refinement by the company. Our aim is to focus on "easy wins"—simple yet impactful improvements that could significantly enhance the onboarding and early gameplay experience for new players.

I always had lots of ideas, so I would like to share with you and the team. Lets see if we the team can manage to introduce them or at least gather some ideas. Please enjoy reading and leave your comments below.

But for all potential new players outside, consider SplinterLands as a combination of the TRIPLE F:

Finances, Fun and Friends!

Key Areas of Focus:

1. Simplified Onboarding Tutorial

The current onboarding process can be overwhelming for new players due to the game's complex mechanics. A revamped, interactive tutorial will break down core concepts into digestible steps.

Features:

  • Step-by-Step Guide: Basic game mechanics (mana cap, card abilities, win conditions) explained through real-time gameplay examples.
  • Quests Integration: New players will complete their first set of basic quests as part of the tutorial, rewarding them with low-tier cards or currency.
  • Demo Mode: Allow users to try out battles with pre-selected cards in demo games without risking any resources or ranking.

2. Starter Deck Adjustments

Providing a competitive, balanced starter deck that allows new players to compete effectively from the outset.

Features:

  • Balanced Pre-Built Decks: Offer players a selection of three different factions or playstyles they can choose from, each with a pre-set competitive deck, ensuring they can immediately engage in meaningful battles.

  • Upgrade Paths: Show clear, progressive paths for upgrading or customizing their starter deck as they earn or purchase new cards.

3. Daily Login Rewards

Introduce a daily login reward system to incentivize regular gameplay and provide new players with useful resources.

Features:

  • Scaling Rewards: Provide daily bonuses like low-tier cards, DEC (Dark Energy Crystals), or credits that increase in value the longer the player maintains their login streak.

  • New Player Bonuses: Additional rewards for new players for the first 30 days, such as temporary boosts in earning potential or reduced DEC entry fees for events.

4. Beginner Tournaments and Leagues

Create a specific beginner league or tournament structure that allows new players to engage with similarly skilled competitors.

Features:

  • Rookie League: Restrict experienced players from these tournaments and create an entry point where new players can test their skills in low-stakes, high-reward environments.

  • Exclusive Events: Weekly beginner events that only allow players who’ve been in the game for under 60 days, with special rewards to encourage participation.

5. Mentorship Program

Introduce a mentorship system where veteran players can be matched with new players to guide them through the game.

Features:

  • Mentor Rewards: Mentors receive in-game rewards based on their mentee’s progress and engagement.
  • Mentee Progress Tracking: Allow mentors to see their mentee's game progress and offer advice on decks, strategies, and events.
  • In-Game Chat Integration: Easy communication between mentors and mentees via in-game messaging, promoting community bonding.

6. Improved User Interface and Tooltips

New players can sometimes feel lost in the UI, especially when learning the various card types, abilities, and game modes.

Features:

  • Interactive Tooltips: When a player hovers over any icon or card ability, a small, detailed tooltip will explain what it means and how it affects gameplay.
  • UI Customization: Allow new players to access a simplified UI with fewer options or buttons cluttering the screen, gradually unlocking more advanced features as they progress.
  • Card Library Enhancement: Provide in-game breakdowns of different card factions, strategies, and how best to use their unique skills.

7. Content and Community Hub

Integrate a hub within the game that gives new players easy access to guides, community content, and FAQs.

Features:

  • Learning Resources: One-click access to strategy guides, YouTube videos, and community articles directly in-game.
  • Community Chat: Open channels where new players can chat with others, share experiences, or ask for help, moderated by experienced community members.
  • Official Discord Integration: Direct links to the official Splinterlands Discord channels where new players can get real-time support and engage with the broader community.

8. Player Progression and Goals System

A goal-oriented system where new players can track their growth and set personal objectives in the game.

Features:

  • Milestone Rewards: Players receive special rewards as they hit certain milestones (e.g., first ranked win, reaching a certain power rating).
  • Roadmap to Success: Display a "path to mastery" screen showing new players how they can evolve in the game from rookie to competitive player.
  • Daily and Weekly Challenges: Tailored challenges designed to guide new players in different aspects of the game, such as deck building, battling, and trading.
