In the past people were influenced by television advertisement and in the current times it is the social media influencers that play this role of influencing people. Point is do they do these promotions in a responsible manner. Think of this advertisement of one of the Face Cream, Fair and Lovely, some years back their advertisement carried slogans like use our cream and get your skin lighter by 2 to 3 shades. Is that for real, I do not know of one single person whose skin has become fair with the use of this cream. Then there were some activist who raised their voice against this promotion of fair skin and they changed their slogan, Ready, Steady, Let's Glow from within.
How convenient that was and millions of people used that cream in the pursuit of turning fair. My mother in law also used this cream for so many years and she would laugh and say that they are robbing her with money, but still she used it because she got habituated to it, and not because she turned fair. I am not even getting into that part if it is safe to use or not, I am only talking about their endorsements which was being promoted by celebrities. These celebrities endorse local products which in reality they may not even be looking at, but yet they endorse because they get heavy money for it.
Like wise there are so many products that we use in our life which we only buy because we are influenced in some or the other way by the branding of that product. The role of social media influencers till the capacity of product endorsements is acceptable but nowadays social media influencers also do some deadly things to get more visibility and followers.
Lately in our town a social media influencer had an accident doing one such promotion and she died in that accident. She went into the waterfalls to take some dramatic pictures, her leg slipped and she fell down 300 ft losing her life. Such a sad thing, now imagine if she would have made it safe, she would have set an example for so many others to do that same stunt and risk their lives.
Nowadays I am finding these social media influencers very scary because for publicity they are going to any extent and this really is a threat for the younger generation to follow their footsteps and copy them. I just wish that they do their jobs in a responsible manner that does not instigate others to do any such thing which is harmful.
