The nominees for the 90th edition of the awards of the American Film Academy were announced on Tuesday, with "The Shape of the Water", "Dunkirk" and "Three announcements for a crime" in front.

Women also make movies

The more than 6,000 voters of the United States Film Academy agreed this year that women also make films.

Greta Gerwig, who made "Lady Bird", is the only woman nominated in the directorial category this year and the fifth in the history of the Oscars.

Only one has won, Kathryn Bigelow, in 2010 for "Living to the limit". And since then, in seven years, none had been nominated.

Rachel Morrison, for her part, is the first woman to receive a nomination for best cinematography direction, for "Mudbound".

About diversity

With "Flee!" Jordan Peele became the third filmmaker nominated at the same time in the categories of best film, directing and script for a first production.

Peele, who used the horror genre to denounce well-intentioned racism, is also the fifth black filmmaker to be nominated for best director, after John Singleton ("The colleagues of the neighborhood"), Lee Daniels ("Precious"), Steve McQueen ("12 years of slavery") and Barry Jenkins with "Moonlight", which won the best film.

Denzel Washington won a surprise eighth nomination for acting in "Roman J. Israel, Esq." He is the black actor who has the most nominations.

He has won two times for "Tiempos de gloria" and "Día de entrenamiento."

The rapper Mary J. Blige got two nominations: one in the category of best supporting actress and the other for the song "Mighty River" for "Mudbound".

Blackjack for Streep

Meryl Streep increased her record as the most nominated interpreter in the history of the Oscars by receiving on Tuesday her 21st nomination for "The Pentagon Files" by Steven Spielberg, who entered only two categories.

He exhibits in his showcase three statuettes: "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979), "The decision of Sophie" (1982) and "The Iron Lady" (2011).

John Williams for his part added to his brand of nominated soundtracks number 46 for "The Last Jedi", the eighth chapter of the Star Wars saga.

In total it has 51 nominations, including five per original song, and is the most nominated living person and second in the industry, behind Walt Disney who received 59.

Kobe Bryant: the Oscar MVP?

NBA legend Kobe Bryant, winner of five titles with the Lakers, was nominated for his animated short "Dear Basketball" made with Glen Keane and composer John Williams.

"What ?!" This goes beyond the realm of the imagination, "Bryant, 39, tweeted after the announcement.

Dislikes and surprises

Among the biggest rebuffs of the day are the Golden Globe nominees Armie Hammer ("Call me by your name") and Hong Chau ("Little Great Life"), which were left out of the Oscars, as well as "Wonder Woman" that did not enter any category.

"Mudbound" and "That's why they call it love" were absent from the category of best film, although they received nominations.

Steven Spielberg ("The Pentagon Files") and Martin McDonagh ("Three Advertisements for a Crime") did not qualify for the best address category, even though their films were among the most acclaimed of the year.
