The news comes as a great surprise as everyone was expecting Arsenal to appoint their former midfield playmaker and current Man.City assistant manager Mikel Arteta in a few hours time, but Arsenal's board had a change of heart at the very last moment.

Arteta was considered by the Arsenal board as the perfect long term replacement for outgoing manager Arsene Wenger, and he convinced many people in the Arsenal camp as he was so persuasive in his interviews.

The fact that he has no experience as a manager was deemed as too risky by The Gunners though, and that was the main reason why they went for Unai Emery at the last moment instead, especially with the club desperate to avoid a 3rd successive season outside the top 4.

Emery has just left PSG after 2 seasons in the French capital, in which he's won the Trophée des Champions, Coupe de France & Coupe De La Ligue in both seasons, while he's also won the Ligue 1 this season.

He's also managed Valencia (2008-2012), Spartak Moscow (2012) & Sevilla (2013-2016) where he's won 3 consecutive Europa League titles, before joining the French giants 2 seasons ago.

The 46-year-old Spanish boss is expected to sign a 4-year contract with The gunners, and while financial details are not confirmed yet, he's expected to earn less than the £8m a year Arsene Wenger was currently earning.
