SketchCrazed – surreal, lurid, unzipped

SketchCrazed is an opportunity for me to share the very strange drawings I do. The common thread is in the attempt to explore new relationships of form, contrast, and pattern, and to see where they take me.

Gobeckli Tepe

This was inspired by the megalithic site in Turkey named Gobeckli Tepe. The drawing is an imaginary journey into the unknown. Who were the builders? Where did they go? What was the site for? What do the carvings mean?

I learned in school that humans were hunter-gatherers up until 10,000 years ago. Right where the hunter gatherers were supposed to have settled down into farming and animal husbandry, we have these incredible Stonehenge-like ruins that are around 11,000 years old, suggesting there was a high culture here. Even if they existed at the same time, it is not possible for hunter-gathering people to support a megalithic-creating culture. There are carvings of symbols and animals on some of the stones, and some believe there are astronomical star symbols as well. It is also believed that the entire site was intentionally buried.
