Silver Un Peso from Chile/ Re-blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

I have been collecting coins from South America for years now. There are so many different countries with beautiful coinage. One of my favorite places on the planet to visit is the country of Chile. I spent a fair amount of time living and working there and it's a great place to visit. It's a very long country west of the Andes Mountains stretching from Peru down to the Arctic circle. In the north there is the Atacama desert which is the driest desert on earth to the south in Punta Arenas there are glaciers and you can even see wild penguins. The people are nice and the food is great.

While living there I picked up some nice silver souvenirs while I was there like I do most places I have visited or lived. Santiago is the capital of the nation and where I have spent most of my time down there. The mint in Santiago was established in 1743 under orders of the Spanish King Ferdinand VI and was taken over by the Chilean government once independence was won. Today's coin was struck in 1879 and it's a nice one, I picked it up in a coin shop in Santiago several years ago.

About the coin:
Country: Chile
Denomination: Un Peso
Mintage: 780,000
Mint: Casa de Monedas de Chile, Santiago
Composition: 90% silver
Weight: 25 grams
Diameter: 37 mm
Edge: Reeded
Demonetized: Yes
Obverse: Andean condor with shield with lettering POR LA RAZON O LA FUERZA (by reason or by force)
Reverse: Escucheon above laurel wreath with Ostrich feathers with lettering REPUBLICA DE CHILE UN PESO (Republic of Chile one Peso)

I really love this coin, it's in great condition although the strike of the coin was a little weak as seen below the condor. The Andean condor is so well detailed and designed, a great coin. At ninety percent silver and twenty-five grams weight it some nice heft to it. These tend to be a little on the expensive side in good condition but great for coin collecting. A little on the pricey side for just stacking though.

If you are interested I included a map of Chile and a picture (not mine though) from one of my favorite places in the nation. The Torres del Paine National Park is an amazing place to visit, not too far from Punta Arenas. There are beautiful Andean mountains and lakes, even glaciers. Well worth the long trip, but remember that winter there is opposite of ours in the northern hemisphere. July and August are usually a very cold time to visit and I wouldn't recommend it!

Thanks for taking time to stop by and read my post. If you have comments or questions please feel free to leave them below!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.
