Silver 50 cent coin from the Bahama Islands/ Re-blog lottery for the chance to win 3 HSBI!

For several years back in the 1990's I lived in the Caribbean. Those were some fun years... One of my favorite things to do was island hop on weekends when I could afford it. At the time American Airlines had puddle jumper specials for $39.99 US round trip to certain islands for the weekend, so I tried to take advantage frequently. One great destination to visit is definitely the Bahama Islands, because there are so many of them! It's a chain of islands just off east of Florida and north of Cuba with amazing fishing and diving. There are quite a few treasure hunters there looking for old shipwreck treasures because there are plenty of old wrecks on the reefs. However I never tried my luck treasure hunting there.

I picked up this coin on one of my trips there, not sure if I was living in Miami or the islands at the time. I found it in a gift shop (so I definitely overpaid) not having a lot of time because I was about to leave on a fishing trip at the time. If I have time I prefer to hunt for local coin shops because the deals are usually much better as well as the selection. What appealed to me was the Blue Marlin on the reverse, it's a great design. And I was there for a fishing trip so it fit in nicely!

About the coin:
Country: Bahama Islands
Mint: Royal Mint, London
Denomination: 50 Cents
Mintage: 701,000
Composition: 80% silver/ 20% copper
Weight: 10.3678 grams
Diameter: 29 mm
Edge: Reeded
Engraver: Arnold Machin
Obverse: Elizabeth II
Reverse: Blue Marlin

At 80% percent silver it's a great collector's coin that was only produced for a few years I believe. Completing a set probably wouldn't be hard or just great for stacking. I'm sure you can get some in much better condition than this one at descent prices because it's not a real heavy coin. I may have added to the patina on this particular one because I stuck it in my pocket and went right out on the boat to fish. I usually take better care of my coins... Ironically I caught a Marlin that same day, so maybe the coin was a good luck charm!

If you haven't been to the Bahama Islands it's definitely a great destination. There are so many little islands that are uninhabited that look like this:

Island living has it's perks like the weather and fresh sea food but can be very expensive. At times I consider moving back, I do miss the lifestyle! One of these days I just might... If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below, and thanks for stopping by!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.
