500 Reis, 1913 coin from Brazil 🌄

Back in the fall of 2018 the sgs community held the third monster raffle, and, for the second year in a row, super-stacker @ronaldoavelino offered a 5 coin pack as his donation. The set consisted of three Brazilian coins and two French coins.

I remembered it from the previous raffle and was super excited when my name was called as the winner of this prize.

The first coin from that prize pack is a 500 Reis, minted in 1913. This coin weighs 5 grams in total, with an actual silver weight (ASW) of 0.1447oz.

The reverse of this coin (above) features the coat of arms of The United States of Brazil. Printed in the banners of the coat of arms is this (translated to English):
Order and Progress
United States of Brazil
November 15, 1889

Nov 15, 1889 was the date of the Proclamation of the Republic of brazil, after a non-violent coup d'état, deposing Emperor Pedro II and the President of the Council of Ministers of the Empire, the Viscount of Ouro Preto.

The coin then has the denomination, 500 reis (reis is the plural form of the word Real). The name comes from the Portuguese word real (in the sense of "royal" or "regal") and was borrowed from a Portuguese currency previously used in Brazil.

At the bottom of the coin is a small letter "A", which denotes this coin being minted in Berlin, Germany. Go figure ¯\(ツ)/¯

I could not find mintage number for this coin.

the obverse of this coin features a bust representing the Republic, the phrase (translated) Republic of the United States of Brazil, 21 stars representing the 21 Brazilian states, and the year.

1913 was the last year the Reis was minted in 90% silver. The 500 Reis was not minted again until the year 1922 when it was minted using a aluminum/bronze mix.

I really like this coin, thanks for checking it out :D
