#2 Success is a destination.

After you understand how fear limits your ability to try new things, you still have to learn how to make your ambitions reality.

Great things can happen by chance but this is one way of greatly increasing the odds in your favor. Try looking at success as a destination, and apply skills you already have to this slightly different puzzle.

First you decide where you want to go. I call this defining my goal. In my experience, this is the hardest part. In my lectures, I share a story about my wife. She never wants to decide where we will have a meal. She always tells me to choose knowing I will always pick Chinese food. Then like clockwork, she says she does not want Chinese and we wind up getting Italian.

If we don't decide what we want to do with our lives, we automatically get caught in someone elses plan because they did decide. It may look random but if we reverse engineer situations where we enjoyed success, we will find a deliberate decision was made. So lets call step 1, define what you want to do.

Step 2 is plan. How do we get to the destination we just chose? Are we the first person to ever go there? Every profession has a path to get there. Learn eveything you can about getting there yourself. This can be daunting and that is where our slave fear chimes in to cause doubt. He can be very persuasive and persistent but we know his weakness and will exploit it each and every time he asks for it.

Planning is a method. Find specific resources for this particular goal. If you dont know where to start, ask someone who already went there. People are vain. This weakness will have them bragging to anyone that will listen how they got to be successful. Exploit that. Soon your map will be made and your inevitable journey will come alive.

Step 3 is Execute. None of the things we want will come to pass if we ignore this step. Leave the house and go on your journey. If you know what you want and you have a plan to get you there, dont be a boob by not going on this journey. If you knew all you had to do was travel to N.Y.C., give a speech at the United Nations and world peace would be the result, you would at least try, wouldnt you?

Define, Plan and Execute.

A few things to remember and look forward to. Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. Get out there and try. You might have few skills and your first plan might stink. Dont worry. You can be a marine and improvise, adapt and overcome any adversity as long as you realize you cant fail. Even when our goal is wiley and keeps moving around, it cant hide from us forever. As you will learn in future posts, the goal is never really the goal. When you get this, you really have something worth sharing.

If you found this helpful, please share it with someone you care about. I have a whole lecture ready to share with your club or company. What do you want to gain?
