In 1918 the Arthur Scherbius applied for a patent on a machine he called Enigma a German engineer the machine used three stepping rotors. When the company presented their first stepping commercial model in 1923 the typewriter versions Enigma A and B. Invention of reflector and uses of the lamps instead of the heavy typewriter made it possible to develop the compact Enigma C.
