According to NASA, an Asteroid named Florence will safely pass Earth on Sept. 1, 2017. It will be cruising at a distance approximately 4.4 million miles. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and NEOWISE mission measured Florence about 2.7 miles in size.
This asteroid fly-by will give opportunity for scientists and astronomers to conduct studies up close.
Schelle "Bobby" Bus discovered the asteroid Florence at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia in March 1981. It is named in honor of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), founder of modern nursing.
Florence will be visible with the use of small telescopes for several nights in late August and early September.
In comparison to the dino-killing asteroid. Florence is like a little sister to it.
