Do we still evolve?

Yes we are still evolving, but the playing field for our species has changed over the years!

How does evolution and natural selection work?

Natural selection is a slow meticulous process. The principle was first written about by Charles Darwin around 1862. The first thing you need to know is that our body's properties is stored in our DNA. Our genes is what determine everything of our body, from our eye colour to our maximum height. Sometimes the genes of an organism can change due to external disturbances like viruses or long exposure to ultra violet light. It could also happen that ones sex cells change and the genome change could change the appearance of the species offspring and or the species as whole.

Here is a small example of how random gene mutations could and could not change the offspring and species. Lets say a mutation happens and it makes the offspring crippled or disabled. Usually in the wild that would mean that the offspring would die and not be able to successfully reproduce. but lets say the genome makes the fur of the a certain specie's offspring white, like the fur of a polar bear, then that offspring could still be able to hunt and fend for themselves. But here is where the environment plays a big role. lets say that species live in a light, snowy area then the white fur would be beneficial for hunting and or hiding. That offspring would successfully live to reproduce and pass on its genes. That would mean more offspring with a white coat. A few generations with successful reproduction later would mean that the whole species would have a snowy white coat.

But we, as a species, have lived in a harsh environment. Quick adaption to change was our most successful trait as a species. Our intellect has gotten us to a point where old problems like certain types of illnesses, eyesight problems (blindness, poor eyesight, etc.) or other body limitations (like a lost limb) would not effect our ability to live a long and reproduce. We have soften the playing field. We have entered a new type of phase of evolution and this phase makes us evolve more rapidly and faster than any other macro species on earth!

We can move at super sonic speeds with jet planes, we can lift materials weighing tons with crane lifts and we can do hard calculations in the wink of an eye with Computers. With every new technological invention comes a new ability for humans. It may seem far fetched for one human, but in the bigger picture as a species in whole this technological advancements helps us improve our abilities and our survival chances.

Unfortunately our Technological evolution have come at the cost of the planet and ts natural distribution of resources. We are a new footprint on the planet and our fast development is too quick for other species to adapt. But luckily we are smart enough to recognize the problem and find solutions. unfortunately not all humans are cooperating, but globalization might help us save our species and the earth! My next post will cover this topic. But the post will come a bit later because I am going on vacation, a bit primitive one because I will not connect on the internet and cut off all communication with the outside "Human" world. I will write a post to share my experience of my vacation.
