University of Georgia ने एक अध्यन में पाया है की पूरी दुनिया में करीब - करीब 4.9 billion tons (cosmosmagazine.com) प्लास्टिक कचरे का उत्पादन होता है। अनुमान किया जाता है की साल 2050 तक यह परिमाण 12 billion tons तक पहुंच जाएगा। लेकिन अच्छी खबर यह है की चीन पिछले 2 दसको से 5०% से जायदा प्लास्टिक अपने देश में आयत करता है। अब सवाल उठता है की क्यों ?
शोध में पाया गया है की चीन में सस्ते लेबर का खजाना है (0.5$-3$/hr CNN data) जिसके बदौलत यहाँ के घर-घर में खिलौने,चप्पल,बॉटल्स,फ़ोन और जरुरी चीजे बनाए जाते है। सन 1990 के बाद से बड़े-बड़े कार्गो शिप में पूरी दुनिया भर से प्लास्टिक कचरे का आयात किया जाता है। जिसे ट्रको के माध्यम से छोटे-छोटे शहरो और गांव तक पहुंचाया जाता है। फिर वहाँ के लोकल कारीगर खरीदकर ले जाते है row material के तौर पर इस्तेमाल करने के लिए।
आज इनकी मात्रा इतनी हो गई है की जहा कही भी हमें Chian Product देखने को मिल जाते है। इसी के बदौलत सन २००१ में चीन को World Trade Organisation का मेंबर चुना गया। Chiness कार्गो में सामान भर भर के बेचते और वापसी में कचरा ले के आते, जिससे इनकी economic condition में सुधार हुआ। इसी दौर में 3०-5० लाख लोगो को रोजगार मिला।
