Hubble finds a smiley face! :)

Alway finding extraordinary things, Hubble has done it again.

The smiley face :) is made up of two yellow coloured galaxies and on very distorted more usually coloured one. The distortion comes from gravitational lensing.

Gravitational lensing has to do with the distortion of spacetime in the presence of truly massive object as predicted by Einstein.

The light is still traveling in a straight line, it's simply the space it is traveling through that is warped and so the light emerging from that part of space appears bent to us from our vantage point.

It is quite common to find galaxies and other light emitting object distorted and lensed by gravity in Hubble photos. What's unusual about this one is simply the proximity to a couple of other galaxies that make the group appear like a smiley face from Hubble's perspective.
