School diaries: The Smurfs hit again!

Remember the Smurf village we built with my second graders? Well it got a little upgrade last week.

That wall behind our handmade Smurf houses looked so depressingly empty that we had to put something on it. The scene could not be complete without some more mushroom houses in the background. Every child got one coloring paper and started using whatever colors they liked to make their own picture. I also put some Smurf music on, as working with music is always more fun and our Art class is supposed to be fun, creative and help us relax, especially since it's always on the last teaching hour of the day, when the kids feel most tired... and restless.

Of course we had some drama! One little boy used up his green marker halfway through painting the grass. Catastrophe! He did not want to use any other green shade, he did not want to use colored pencils to complete his grass, he did not want to continue coloring at all! He would just stand there, looking at his "ruined" artwork with tears going down his cheeks. Luckily, his good friend had a green marker of the same shade which he lent to our little Drama King (as it's not the first time he weeps over some insignificant mishap). The tears ran dry and we finally completed our lovely Smurf village houses for our background.

Sky pictures are coming for our next Art lesson and I must say I feel pretty excited to see that Smurf scene being put together.
