The Raspberry Pi, a popular and affordable small computer that can be used for a wide range of projects, has just released a new camera module. The new Camera Module 3 offers an upgraded image resolution and advanced features when compared to the previous versions of the camera.

According to Raspberry Pi's creator, Eben Upton, the Camera Module was one of the first official accessories for the Raspberry Pi when it was first released in 2013. It quickly became a popular product, and led to the development of a second version, the 8MP Camera Module 2, which sold over two million units. With technology continually advancing, the team at Raspberry Pi has now released the latest version of the camera, the Camera Module 3.

This new camera features a 12 megapixel Sony sensor, which allows for sharper and more detailed images than before. It also has a new capability, called powered autofocus, which can produce clear images of objects from close up to infinity. With this new camera, there are four different options for buyers to choose from. There are two options for the standard field of view (FoV), one that captures visible light and another that can work with infrared light. Both of these options are also available in a wider field of view version.

Another exciting feature of the Camera Module 3 is its high dynamic range (HDR) capability. Unlike traditional cameras that use a single exposure time for the entire image, the Camera Module 3 takes multiple simultaneous exposures with different exposure times. This allows the camera to select the best exposure for each area of the image, resulting in a more detailed and clear final image, even in challenging lighting conditions.

The standard FoV models of the Camera Module 3 are priced at $25, and the wide view models are priced at $35. Additionally, a variant of the High Quality Camera with a native M12 mount is also available for $50. This version eliminates the need for an adapter and allows for more versatile lens options. The new cameras are compatible with all Raspberry Pi models, except for the rPi 400 and the launch edition of the Pi Zero.

It's worth mentioning that, though the board dimensions and mounting hole positions of Camera Module 3 are identical to Camera Module 2, however, it may not fit in the camera lid for the Raspberry Pi Zero Case due to the changes in size and position of the sensor module.

Overall, the new Camera Module 3 offers a significant upgrade in image resolution and advanced features for Raspberry Pi users, and will open up a wide range of new possibilities for photography and imaging projects.
