지구촌 최대 겨울 스포츠 축제 동계올림픽이 대한민국에서 막을 올렸다.
2018 평창동계올림픽이 9일 오후 8시 강원도 평창 올림픽 스타디움에서 열린 개회식과 함께 17일간의 잔치를 시작했다.
'모두를 빛나게 하는 불꽃'(Let Everyone Shine)이라는 슬로건을 내걸고 101일간 전국 2천18㎞를 달린 성화도 평창 하늘에 타올랐다.
강원도 평창·강릉·정선 일원에서 열리는 이번 평창 대회는 23번째 동계올림픽이다.
평창은 두 차례 유치 실패를 경험하고서 2011년 7월 남아프리카공화국 더반에서 열린 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 총회에서 2018년 올림픽 개최지로 선정됐다.
대한민국은 평창올림픽 개최로 동·하계올림픽, 월드컵축구대회, 세계육상선수권대회 등 세계 4대 스포츠 이벤트를 모두 연 세계 5번째 나라가 됐다.
대한민국보다 앞서 이를 이룬 나라는 프랑스·독일·이탈리아·일본이었다.
'하나 된 열정'(Passion. Connected)이라는 슬로건을 내걸고 치르는 평창올림픽에는 총 92개국에서 2천920명의 선수가 참가한다.
참가 국가와 선수 수에서 모두 동계올림픽 사상 최다였던 2014년 러시아 소치 대회(88개국 2천858명)를 넘어섰다.
우리나라도 15개 전 종목에 걸쳐 선수 145명과 임원 75명 등 총 220명으로 역대 최대 규모의 선수단을 꾸렸다.
에콰도르를 비롯해 말레이시아, 싱가포르, 에리트레아, 코소보, 나이지리아 등 6개국은 평창에서 첫 번째 동계올림픽을 치른다.
평창 대회는 동계올림픽 역사상 100개 이상 금메달이 걸린 최초의 대회다. 선수들은 평창에서 소치 대회보다 4개 늘어난 총 102개의 금메달을 놓고 4년간 키워온 기량을 겨룬다.
소치 대회 종목 중에서 스노보드 평행회전(남·여)이 제외되고 스노보드 빅에어(남·여), 스피드스케이팅 매스스타트(남·여), 알파인스키 혼성 단체전, 컬링 믹스더블이 새로 추가됐다.

The 2018 Winter Olympics started a 17-day banquet with the opening ceremony held at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in Gangwon Province at 8:00 p.m. on July 9.
The 101-kilometer torch, which ran 2,180 kilometers nationwide, was also lit up in Pyeongchang under the slogan, " Let's Let's Light Up. "
It is the 23rd Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, Gangneung and Jeongseon in Gangwon Province.
Having experienced two failed bids, Pyeongchang was selected to host the 2018 Olympics at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) General Assembly in Durban, South Africa in July 2011.
South Korea has become the fifth country in the world to host the Games in a row, hosting four of the world`s major sports events : the Summer Olympics, the World Cup soccer finals, and the World Athletics Championships.
The first countries to achieve this were France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
The Pyeongchang Games, under the slogan ' Passion.Connect, ' will draw 2,920 athletes from 92 countries.
The number of athletes who participated in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics was the highest ever, when Russia attracted 2,858 athletes from 88 countries.
Korea also has the largest team ever with 220 athletes, 145 and 75 executives.
Ecuador, Malaysia, Singapore, Eritrea, Kosovo and Nigeria will host the first Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
PyeongChang is the first Olympic Games to capture more than 100 gold medals in the history of the Winter Games. Athletes compete for the skills they have developed in Pyeongchang over four years for a total of 102 gold medals, up 4 from Sochi.
Among Sochi competition events, snowboard big air (ladies and men), speed skating mass start, ski mixed competitions, and the new ski mix were added, excluding snowboard parallel rotation (ladies and men).
