From Genesis 11 we know that there was a time period when the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. The people conspired together as one to build a city and a tower, to reach to the heavens. It goes on to say that the Lord seen what man had been building and intervened to confuse their language:

"7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city."
The confusing of the languages, or different languages for different tribes/peoples/nations served its purpose, but was not to be permanent. Zephaniah 3:9 tells us that a pure language would be introduced, so the people may call on the name of the Lord:

"9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent."

Which language is spoken by the greatest number of non-native speakers worldwide, the primary language of international travel and commerce and the language with the most words and definitions?
It is English.
English is spoken by 250 million to 350 million non-native speakers and is the language with the most words and definitions, it has approximately 250,000 distinct words with roughly 615,000 definitions. Language and intelligence are tightly connected and the more definitions/meanings/expressions means more ideas and creativity. From The Gospel of Angelus Domini (link to ICOLR at bottom of page), we also know that: "this is a major reason why England and the U.S. led the industrial revolution, and English was seeded and promulgated around the world, so that at this time it would become the universal language that would fulfil the Zephaniah 3:9 prophecy." This is also probably why the English/British Empire were so active and successful in colonising foreign lands, spreading the pure language.
