Doom 2 With Ray Tracing is Almost a New Game

I have to wonder if back in the day the development team had any idea what they were creating when they set out to create Doom. I mean, surely there is no way anyone would have thought their openness with the community would spur the last 30 plus years of mods and changes the gaming fans have made with Doom and Doom 2. Take adding ray tracing to Doom 2 for example.

What is Old is New Again

Environments look immensely better. Monitors cast a light green glow into the room, gun flashes light up the immediate area, and more. This is simply amazing. I could never have dreamed of playing something this beautiful back in the day – I don’t think anyone could.

You can even choose on the fly which graphics mode you prefer. To top it off, you can apparently render half the screen in one style and the other half in the other. Talk about too cool. That is an interesting option to say the least.

I love how the enemies explode and gibs, chunks, pile up, some blood gets on the walls as well. This reminds me of an old first-person shooter on the 3DO, later on PlayStation and Saturn and PC but those versions removed the heart beat monitor so are inferior to me.

Space Hulk. That game was amazing at setting up the dreadful atmosphere and scares. Doom 2 Ray Traced reminds me of that but much more graphical and impressive.

Not Stock Doom 2

I am not up to date on all the various mods and initials being used in the information files on this mod. I am not going to pretend to be either. I just know this version of Doom 2 is simply amazing looking and OMG, in many places.

If you are looking for a detailed, in-depth analysis of all the changes then there are plenty of YouTube channels that delve into this, as well as tons of articles on Google doing it. I am not that kind of content creator.

I can tell you this is not stock Doom 2 but much beyond that, I have no clue.

Doom 2: Ray Traced is simply beautiful and gory as all get out. If you are looking for a way to play Doom 2 in a more impressive manner on your newer PC, here you go.

Head over to MODDB.com and grab the necessary files and follow the very simple instructions.
