This is my first entry for the #MarketFriday challenge initiated by the wonderful @dswigle. I first heard of this challeneg from @elizacheng and so a big thank you to her. In fact, I wanted to post earlier but was not sure whether I was only allowed to post on Friday. So just to be on the safe side, I post on a Friday.
The Batu Kawa township is a suburb about a 45-minute drive from downtown Kuching. Over the past 10 years, this area has developed so much. As the prices of houses in Kuching center have virtually skyrocketed, more families have shifted to Batu Kawa township in search of more affordable housing.
My son Jonathan who is autistic attends the Resource and Educational Centre operated by the Kuching Autistic Association. This center is located at Batu Kawa and so one fine morning after dropping Jonathan off I decided to go to E-Mart which is a shopping complex cum fresh (wet) market.
This bright red sign greeted me as I enter the building.
In Kuching, the wet market and the shopping complex are normally not located in the same area. E-mart is unique that it houses both a shopping complex and a wet market in the same building.
The market was not very crowded while I was there. A traditional market normally will have wet floors. Here the floors are dry and clean and customers can shop in comfort with air-conditioning.
This stall is selling fresh chicken meat.
You can buy fish from here too.
Fruit stalls can be found here too.
I bought some dragon fruits.
There are also some stalls selling dry stuff like spices, instant noodles and canned food.
For those without a fridge, salted fish is a good choice as it can lost longer at room temperature.
There is a wide choice of vegetables to choose from.
This vegetable is indigenous to Borneo, locally it is known as "Terung Dayak" or Dayak Brinjal.
Different types of chillies are available.
A closer look at some of the vegetables for sale.
From the wet market, I walked to the shopping complex component of the building. Like most, shopping complexes, a supermarket is located there.
This supermarket is special because it is the only one in Kuching that is open 24 hours a day. So you can come here on anytime of the day.
Although it is quite early in the morning, there were already quite a number of shoppers at the check out counter.
The customer service counters offer a wide range of services for the convenience of shoppers.
As it is still quite early, there were not a lot of customers at the food court.
There were also a number of stalls selling packed food and drinks, these are for take-away and not meant to be consumed at the stall.
The food sold range from local cakes to fried noodles, rice and kueh tiaw.
A bakery advertising the range of pastries available.
One of the F&B oulets that can be found here is Subway.
For the convenience of shoppers, there are a number of ATMs here.
There is even a bowling centre located on the second floor of the building.
Weary shoppers can pamper themselves at a massage centre operated by the blind. The centre is not opened yet as it is still early.
E-Market at Batu Kawa has introduced a number of innovations. Firstly, it combines a wet market with a shopping market. Secondly it operates the only 24-hours supermarket in Kuhing. This is defintely a one stop centre for your shopping needs.
