OpenAI Bringing Common Sense to Their Models

Ever since the rollout of ChatGPT, I personally have inquired about information from the AI more than I would on search engines like Google. And I'd like to think that it is the same for many people.

Rather than surf through different sites to gather the information I need, especially on broader topics, it usually seems more convenient to have AI do it for me and provide something more concrete.

There are a wide variety of things I use AI for, and even way more for some other people. Developers, writers, podcasters, YouTubers, and many kinds of people turn to AI to make things much easier and help them perform more efficiently.

Imperfections and Safety Concerns

Personal matters, even, study shows that people, particularly kids, are turning to AI for personal issues.

Here's the catch: AI isn't perfect. There have been hundreds of times when AI would hallucinate and make things up, provide inaccurate results, or make even really obvious mistakes. How safe, then, is AI in our everyday lives, and how much of a boon or pitfall is it in the world today?

As the days pass, there are more and more ways that AI can be used—so much so that there have been so many layoffs at companies lately due to "AI replacing people at their jobs." Also, there are rising ethical concerns about the responsible use and development of AI.

OpenAI, the pioneer behind ChatGPT, recognises the importance of safety in the use of AI and is therefore partnering with organisations to continue to ensure that harm to kids and families with their AI models is minimised. And now they have done so with Common Sense Media to collaborate on AI guidelines.

OpenAI's Safety Initiatives

Common Sense Media is an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive. [1] And OpenAI's collaboration with them is a positive step towards addressing ethical concerns and promoting guidelines for responsible AI use.

With this partnership, their first focus will be on developing AI guidelines and educational materials for teens, parents, and educators. It includes resources to help them understand the potential benefits and risks of AI and how to use these tools responsibly. [2] And as well as the selection of family-friendly GPTs in the GPT Store based on Common Sense Media ratings and standards.

Data Handling Concerns

There are lines surrounding the use of AI, yet not many people are knowledgeable about them, thereby resulting in unethical approaches. The aim of this partnership between OpenAI and Common Sense Media is to educate people so as to avoid any unintended consequences of this emerging technology, as James P Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, said.

How AI handles the data of people is also another concern, and some investigations have been carried out on whether ChatGPT harmed consumers through its collection of data and publication of false statements about individuals. This is part of the pressure OpenAI faces.

Toward a Safer Future

As the development and application expand, it is important that evaluations are carried out and effective guidelines are provided in order to provide a safe environment for AI in the lives of kids, families, and educators. Although this partnership doesn't completely solve every issue, it's a positive step further into a safer future with these AI models.
