El género del terror (junto al de acción) debe ser el que está más unidos a lo que se conocen como "Películas B"; recordemos que este tipo de producciones son de bajo presupuesto y que son más fáciles y rápidas de hacer. Muchas de estas películas las cuales abundaron desde mediados de los 70' hasta finales de los 80' crearon producciones que ocuparon un lugar especial en los aficionados al género porque a pesar de tener poco dinero para desarrollar buenos efectos especiales, las personas reconocieron el esfuerzo de quienes trabajaron en ese proyecto sin importar que tan bueno o malo son; en la actualidad existe varias producciones que son éxitos en taquilla a pesar de su bajo presupuesto y no se puede contar como películas B porque cuentan con el apoyo de grandes productoras, pero eso no evita de que también existan productores, directores y guionistas que quieran hacer homenaje o demostrar que este estilo de hacer películas puede seguir atrayendo a los fieles y nuevos fans.
The horror genre (along with the action genre) must be the one that is most closely linked to what are known as "B movies"; remember that these types of productions are low-budget and are easier and quicker to make. Many of these movies which abounded from the mid 70's to the late 80's created productions that occupied a special place in the genre fans because despite having little money to develop good special effects, people recognized the effort of those who worked on that project no matter how good or bad they are; Today there are several productions that are box office hits despite their low budget and can not be counted as B movies because they have the support of large production companies, but that does not prevent that there are also producers, directors and screenwriters who want to pay tribute or show that this style of filmmaking can continue to attract the faithful and new fans.
El pasado año fuimos testigo de como el director Ti West creó una franquicia basada en la idea de explorar el terror desde las necesidades de una mujer por sentirse única; el primer film el cual se llamó "X" se convirtió en un homenaje no solo por cómo se realizaba las películas para adultos sino también un homenaje para esos films de terror los cuales puedo decir que ambos géneros entran en ser de tipo B y justamente esa sensación de homenaje influencia de ese estilo de films lo percibo en esta película también de terror, un slasher que se llama "Candy Land" el cual relata la historia de un grupo de trabajadores sexuales que hacen vida en una parada de camiones y que su peligrosa monotonía se ve interrumpida por la llegada de una joven mujer llamada "Remy" quien huyó de un grupo de fanáticos religiosos; esta nueva integrante del grupo llamado "Lot Lizards" deberá lidiar con una completa vida de fe y una nueva manera de trabajo mientras ocurren una serie de asesinatos en un lugar olvidado por Dios.
Last year we witnessed director Ti West create a franchise based on the idea of exploring horror from a woman's need to feel unique; the first film which was called "X" became a tribute not only to how adult films were made but also a tribute to those horror films which I can say that both genres fall into the B genre and just that sense of homage influenced by that style of film I sense in this horror film as well, a slasher called "Candy Land " which tells the story of a group of sex workers who live in a truck stop and their dangerous monotony is interrupted by the arrival of a young woman named "Remy" who fled from a group of religious fanatics; this new member of the group called "Lot Lizards" must deal with a whole new way of working and a whole new life of faith as a series of murders occur in a godforsaken place.
Esta película, la cual fue estrenada el pasado mes de enero tanto en servicio de streaming como en las salas de cine, fue producida, dirigida y escrita por John Swab quien ha dirigido varios films de diferentes géneros y esta es su primera incursión en el terror. Esta producción, a pesar de basarse en 1996, posee una imagen muy de la época de los 70' y es que claramente se nota ese tipo de influencia en las varias escenas por el filtro de la cámara que la hacen ver muy antigua, así como todos los personajes que aparecen en ese lugar, el cual pareciera que se detuvo en el tiempo. Me gustaron las muchas tomas y la diferente manera de editar y es que pareciera que tanto Swab y editor decidieron mostrar diferentes maneras de mostrar a los personajes compartiendo una misma escena o al momento de pasar de un lugar a otro y es que posiblemente no quería perder algunas tomas y a la vez eliminó otras en dónde seguramente pensó que no sería relevante para la historia.
El guion me pareció correcto para un slasher porque une a dos cosas como son el fanatismo religioso y los peligros que deben enfrentar quienes son trabajadores sexuales; en mi opinión tiene lo adecuado para encajar en todo lo referente al motivo que debe tener un asesino serial y esa es mi opinión desde el punto de vista en conjunto con respecto a un factor importante en esta historia; ahora viéndola desde puntos de vista por separado u obviando el hecho de ser un film de terror, el trabajo realizado por Swab es algo que está lleno de realismo a pesar de que ese lugar donde ocurre está historia posiblemente sea ficticio, pero no deja de ser real los peligros que deben enfrentar estás personas que se ganan la vida teniendo sexo por dinero; no hay duda de que sus vidas están en completo peligro sea por sus clientes o para quienes trabajan; con respecto al fanatismo religioso, la historia nos ha enseñado lo capaces que pueden ser este grupo de personas por querer ser reconocidos por un poder divino y eso se trata de una manera perfecta en este film, la disociación de la realidad es un factor importante para el relato de esta historia.
This film, which was released last January both in streaming service and in theaters, was produced, directed and written by John Swab who has directed several films of different genres and this is his first foray into horror. This production, despite being based in 1996, has a very 70's era image and it is clearly noticeable that kind of influence in the various scenes by the camera filter that make it look very old, as well as all the characters that appear in that place, which seems to have stopped in time. I liked the many shots and the different way of editing and it seems that both Swab and the editor decided to show different ways of showing the characters sharing the same scene or at the moment of moving from one place to another and possibly did not want to lose some shots and at the same time eliminated others where he probably thought it would not be relevant to the story.
The script seemed to me right for a slasher because it unites two things such as religious fanaticism and the dangers that sex workers must face; in my opinion it has the right thing to fit in everything related to the motive that a serial killer must have and that is my opinion from the point of view as a whole regarding an important factor in this story; now looking at it from separate points of view or obviating the fact that it is a horror film, the work done by Swab is something that is full of realism even though the place where this story takes place is possibly fictitious, but it is still real the dangers that these people who make a living having sex for money have to face; there is no doubt that their lives are in complete danger either for their clients or for those they work for; with respect to religious fanaticism, history has taught us how capable this group of people can be for wanting to be recognized by a divine power and that is treated in a perfect way in this film, the dissociation of reality is an important factor for the telling of this story.
Nunca soy tan exigente con las actualizaciones en este tipo de films, pero en esta oportunidad me parecieron correctas, en especial la de Olivia Luccardi quien interpreta a "Remy", la cual es una chica que decide irse de una secta religiosa la cual fundó su madre; ella es una mujer inocente que a pesar de llegar en un lugar el cual para cualquier religión y sociedad es vista como pecaminoso, encuentra el apoyo y comprensión de una disfuncional familia la cual le exige de cambio el uso de su cuerpo para poder seguir con ellos; la actuación de Olivia es muy convincente porque tiene la imagen de ser una persona buena que descubre un mundo el cual no debería descubrir, no por obligación y eso puede interrumpir sus creencias. El otro al cual vi que hizo un buen trabajo fue William Baldwin como "Rex" personaje incómodo, manipulador, depravado, alguien muy extraño y cada vez que aparece en escena, está esa sensación de desagrado y por todo eso creo que este es la mejor actuación que le he visto a este actor. De último puedo nombrar a Owen Campbell quien interpreta a "Levi", tiene todo para ser una víctima, en varios momentos lo es, pero también tiene la fortaleza para lidiar con varias cosas, aunque ese degenere su mente cada vez más; tal vez sea el mejor actor del film junto a Luccardi y por eso creo que es otro importante protagonista en esta historia.
I'm never so demanding with the updates in this kind of films, but this time I found them correct, especially that of Olivia Luccardi who plays "Remy", which is a girl who decides to leave a religious sect which her mother founded; she is an innocent woman who despite arriving in a place which for any religion and society is seen as sinful, finds the support and understanding of a dysfunctional family which demands her to use her body in order to stay with them; the performance of Olivia is very convincing because she has the image of being a good person who discovers a world which she should not discover, not by obligation and that can disrupt her beliefs. The other one I saw who did a good job was William Baldwin as "Rex" uncomfortable character, manipulative, depraved, someone very strange and every time he appears on stage, there is that feeling of displeasure and for all that I think this is the best performance I've seen this actor. Lastly I can name Owen Campbell who plays "Levi", he has everything to be a victim, in several moments he is, but he also has the strength to deal with several things, even if that degenerates his mind more and more; maybe he is the best actor of the film next to Luccardi and that's why I think he is another important protagonist in this story.
Pude leer alguna que otra opinión sobre este film el cual indicaba de que el final no fue lo mejor o que era como otras películas del género y en mi opinión están equivocados; primeramente su relato y evolución de los asesinatos es un tema el cual pude disfrutar; en eso puedo decir que la dirección, el desarrollo de un personaje y quién lo interpreta hace un buen trabajo, pero el motivo de las muertes y el punto de vista que se tiene de ellas es lo que considero perfecto en esta producción; es algo que si valoro en este tipo de films y es lo que más me ha gustado; lo otro es lo bien dirigido de su acto final, es un complemento adecuado para toda la historia. "Candy Land" es un claro ejemplo de como un slasher sigue siendo un género divertido y fácil de hacer, me gusta que respete clichés del género y no trate de buscar o hacer algo nuevo, también que implemente la base para una nueva historia que posiblemente esté más apegada a lo que son este tipo de films en dónde se siga usando la explotación sexual, el fanatismo, muertes y que por supuesto siga demostrando influencias de clásicos del terror y más importante, no perder esa marca de película B que la hace más atrayente.
I was able to read some opinions about this film which indicated that the ending was not the best or that it was like other films of the genre and in my opinion they are wrong; first of all its story and evolution of the murders is a theme which I could enjoy; in that I can say that the direction, the development of a character and who plays him does a good job, but the motive of the deaths and the point of view of them is what I consider perfect in this production; it is something that I do value in this kind of films and it is what I liked the most; the other thing is how well directed its final act is, it is an adequate complement for the whole story. "Candy Land" is a clear example of how a slasher is still a fun and easy to make genre, I like that it respects the clichés of the genre and does not try to find or do something new, also that it implements the basis for a new story that is possibly more attached to what are this type of films where sexual exploitation, fanaticism, deaths are still used and of course still showing influences of horror classics and most importantly, not losing that brand of B-movie that makes it more attractive.
