MUTERRA : ORIGIN STORY - PART 1

21st December 2012 : Doomsday

The Maya calendar had predicted the end of the world. People were expecting something grand, like tsunamis, earthquakes or other known calamities. But nothing happened. Or so they thought…

2013 - 2023 : Good Days Ahead?

From that day since, the Earth's inner radiation started increasing gradually, and a new term was coined for it - "Endoradiation".
While a few scientists did notice and study it in it's early stages, Endoradiation was vastly overlooked and deemed inconsequential in the face of more pressing ecological matters like global warming and COVID-19.

By the end of the year 2023, Endoradiation brought forth numerous mutations in Flora & Fauna. It was seen as nature's positive response to climate change as it tried to mend itself.

Plants started reconquering deforested regions, new species of animals and insects, thought extinct, reappeared around the world, and biodiversity overall was on the rise. But what was welcomed as “nature regulating itself” was actually the dusk on mankind’s era, and a herald of things to come.

2024 - 2027 : Rising Hell

It started with minor aberrant traits in new-borns. Some were born without eyes, others with scaly skin, or with a second heart. A lot of these mutations weren’t viable and child mortality rose sharply throughout the world for the first time in centuries.
It was enough to warrant official statements of grief but not enough for a thorough investigation. Especially not with the increasing number of natural disasters and pandemics.

Mutations that affected the animals, plants, and humans, also impacted bacteria, viruses, and fungi. COVID-19 was just a prelude to the oncoming diseases. Humanity started struggling with a new form of pandemic almost every six months; spiralling the world into economic, sanitary, and social crises.

story2.jpg

By 2027, most varieties of crops mutated and became inedible for normal people, plunging more than half of the world’s population into famine and widespread panic.
The remains of cats, dogs, birds and rats littered the streets, feeding the daring and the desperate.

Orchestrating this mess from the shadows, the Endoradiation kept affecting all. It increased fertility in flora and fauna ten-fold, leading to a population boom. The change however remained in the shadows; for a majority of the mutations lead to cancerous growths and a shortened life span. Bodies were quickly devoured by those surviving, life recycled into life until its perfected version emerged from the heap.
And within a couple of years, the world went through evolution and natural selection which should have taken centuries.

22nd September 2028 : The Spike

All these events culminated on 22nd September 2028; The Spike, the Colored Night, the End of the world.
The cataclysm was given different names by those who survived it. That day, the Endoradiation surged a hundredfold, triggering a series of drastic events; all dire for humankind.

All the plants and life forms started mutating rapidly, taking on even more dangerous aspects, growing in size and gaining new extraordinary abilities. Something triggered in them, making them violent, fearless and invasive.

Humans born before 2012 started perishing in waves, some as soon as The Spike happened, others surviving no more than 4 days, all the while struggling in agony to assist the unaffected children.

story1.jpg

There was a violent shift in the Earth's magnetic poles, triggering catastrophes like floods, eruptions, cyclones, and earthquakes. All this resulted in a drastic change of Earth's landscape and climatic conditions.

The Spike disabled all electronic devices, throwing humanity back into a technological dark age. Means of communication and transport, all became useless in an instant. And with them broke the bond that kept humanity connected.

1st Month After the Spike : Despair

Man’s Era was butchered under the graceful ballet of auroras, painting the skies and lighting the nights for a week. Haggard children stumbled through the ruins of their towns, struggling to feed themselves, or care for their siblings; hunted by what used to be their trustworthy pets, haunted by the sights of their families’ corpses.

story3.jpg

With an estimated survival rate below 1%, The Spike turned teenagers into survivors, and kids into liabilities. Groups were formed, often around classmates. friends, “adults” of 15 years old.

Encampments were built, fortified around sturdy buildings, and invariably destroyed by roaming mutated animals which the survivors started referring to as mutees. Lack of heating, cooking, and clean water forced the young adults to devolve into a violent primitive state, riddled with hunger and anxiety.

1st Winter After the Spike : Impending Extinction

The first winter, barely months away from The Spike, wiped another half of the remaining population. Those who survived continuously attempted to fend off mutees as a group while searching for canned food and clean water, desperately trying to live through the acute shortage of basic amenities.

story4.png

Most settlements failed, overrun in weeks by the onslaught of mutated creatures. Mutees, no matter their size, seemed to smell and identify humans as a delicacy, sometimes breaking their predatorial charts to team up on careless survivors.

Hanging by a thread, civilization held on in hopes of a miracle....
