Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 9 Part 1

This is a video from Day 9 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' five hundred and sixty-eight days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. This is another fireside video. In this video I talk about the coyotes testing the boundaries of how close they can get and how I got three of my dogs back while one stayed in the woods barking at the retreating coyotes. I also continue to talk about the windows that I found and how I can potentially use them to make a greenhouse or something but that often with old wooden windows with rotten frames they are not really worth the effort to use. I also talk about patching a big hole in the rear of the shack with one of the windows and an old piece of plywood siding and other pieces of lumber that I found. I also mention that I used the plywood specifically so that if a bear or something comes into the shack I can kick the plywood out and create an 'escape hatch'. I also mention how it is always a good idea to have a good 'exit strategy' even if it is just having a knife in a tent to slice open the tent and escape whatever is coming in the entrance. I also talk about tarping off the interior of the shack's rear room so that it is windproof and waterproof. I also talk about using old tarps to smash down more of the high brush in the 'side yard'. I also talk about creating a charging station, building some storage and getting a kitchen area setup. I also talk about bracing the shack inside and using the bracing as a place to store my newly purchased lumber.

I get off on a tangent about using the Baygen Freeplay to charge my phone, an old tablet, my five volt backup battery and the battery in my five volt speaker system. I mention perhaps eventually using a capacitor with the Baygen but that it is better to not experiment with it until I have my solar panel because (the Baygen) is my only way to charge anything and I don't want to accidentally damage it.

I also mention the importance of always having a battery operated smoke detector when living in these sorts of conditions and even using them when using propane appliances in a tent.
