entry reflections 182: geiranger

Geiranger is a small town nestled between the steep mountains at the end of the narrow curving Geirangerfjorden. it is one the most scenic towns in Norway and is a very popular tourist destination. one of the attractions is a boat ride on the fjord to view the waterfalls cascading down the incredibly steep mountains on both sides of the fjord

we were there in the middle of June. since most of the snow in the mountains had already melted we arrived just a little late for the most dramatic falls but nobody was complaining. there are seven major falls, collectively known as the seven sisters, none of which are visible from the town. they are best viewed from the fjord so of course we bought a ticket for a tour. we were not the only ones as the town explodes in the summer with tourists from all around the country and the world.

the weather was too windy to get nice reflections of mountains on the fjord but as we were waiting for the boat to arrive there were great reflections in the window of the ticket office and another building beside it

i had a hard time decide which photo to enter into the contest this one above or the one below
i finally decided on this one

if you like waterfalls this is a great place to visit. the beginning of June is the ideal time of year because that is when the amount of water in the falls is at the peak. and though it is surrounded by high mountains and the sun disappears relatively early it is light all night and the sky can be quite dramatic around midnight.

though the scenery was splendid the boat ride could have been better by getting closer to the falls. the water is plenty deep so it would have been no problem. if you are sporty why not try a kayak instead
