Dhammapada (Filipino) - verse 1

Dhammapada verse 1

from Chapter 1 (Twinned Verses)

Mind precedes created things;
Mind’s their chief, from mind they spring.
With tainted mind who speaks or acts,
Pain trails that man like the wheel trails ox-tracks.

Filipino (Tagalog) translation

Ang isip ay nangunguna sa nilikhang mga bagay;
Ang isip ang kanilang pinuno, mula sa isip sila sumisibol.
Kapag may maruming isip na nagsasalita o kumikilos,
Sinusundan ng kirot ang taong iyon katulad ng gulong na sumusunod sa dinaanan ng baka.

Translation notes

  • For simplicity, the word "baka" (which is "cow" in English) is used instead of "kapong baka" (which means "ox" or "castrated cow").
  • The Filipino phrase "Kapag may maruming isip" has a literal translation of "When there is a dirty mind".
  • Translations are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate.
