Yesterday was a big day. A long awaited day for many Ukrainians residing in this city of the Netherlands.
When I had my first appointment with the city hall to get registered with the city hall, my primary question was regarding jobs. I'm skilled, educated, energetic and motivated. There is no reason for me to be jobless in a first world English speaking county. There are many Ukrainians like myself here. I was told to fill a form and left it with the city hall.
It has been months since the first appointment and no one got back to me with anything. Only recently all the Ukrainians in this city were informed about the job fair. Honestly, I was very excited for it. There was a mention that there would be Healthcare recruiters, too. I had high expectations from this fair.
So what happened?
The fair was very useful to many. Not all, but many. As soon as I got there I was swarmed by many who already know me by now. I spent a good chunk of time translating and finding the right recruiters for the Ukrainians. I'd say I've directly helped at least 10 people find immediate jobs.
The sad part was that it became evidently clear that this specific job fair was not meant for skilled workers. There was literally nothing for skilled people. But one recruiter told me that there would be a fair in the near future for skilled workers.
Among open positions there were jobs for cleaners, cooks, construction workers, car washers, production workers and so on. As you can see, not something I see myself working as. But many were more than happy to get a job.
I did link up with a recruiter who was representing "Healthcare" but was really looking for helpers at a retirement home. Nothing medical about it nor is it something the house would need a doctor for. Nevertheless, we had a productive chat and exchanged contact info to keep in touch and work on any promising opportunities that do show up.
I also met a recruiter who I've been visiting very often with other Ukrainians. At one point he asked if I wanted to "switch careers" temporarily. He mentioned that I could keep helping the people while getting paid as a recruiter. I've never really thought about it, but now the idea is stuck in my head. I have the email where I should send my application for the position of a recruiter. But not sure.
I do speak quite a few languages and I'm keeping busy by helping others find a job. I've myself sent over a hundred emails trying to stick my foot through the medical system just to stay close to my passion. Maybe working as a recruiter on temp basis isn't a bad idea.
