This desperate and dangerous step was taken by the French inventor Jean-Pierre François Blanchard.
It seems that the French wanted to control the sky more than anyone else, but perhaps someone looked at this issue differently and wanted to leave France, enveloped in a revolutionary mood, and escape from the invention of another, the great genius, Monsieur Joseph Guillotin, as the heroes of the novel did. Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island" by stealing a balloon.
As you remember, they crashed and ended up on a mysterious island.
But, strangely, there, they were able to make nitroglycerin explosives, but, they could not make a balloon to leave the island ... they left the island, but on another French invention, lol, on Captain Nemo's submarine, on Nautilus.
