About Timothy Ferris

Timothy Ferris is a famous writer, orator and traveler, whose fascinating life is watched by such famous publications as National Geographic Traveler, New York Times and Maxim. At age 29, Timothy remotely manages a multinational company, constantly being at the same time in different parts of the world. In parallel, the author learned to communicate freely in six languages, set a world record in tango dancing, became a champion in kickboxing in China, starred in films in Hong Kong and is not going to stop there.

The introduction to the book consists of three separate parts, where Timothy Ferris answers the most common questions of readers and emphasizes the main reasons why you should read his book.

To simplify the perception and more efficient distribution of information, the author divided the book into four parts, called steps and including seventeen chapters in total. In the last part of the book, Timothy Ferris placed bonus chapters and information about the author himself.

Step I: STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In the four chapters of the first part of the book, Timothy proposes to carry out serious work on himself and take such important steps as:

  • Internal liberation. The author calls once and for all to get rid of the main stereotypes, and change his own system of thinking. To abandon the generally accepted standards in favor of finding the meaning of life, self-realization and the opportunity to be useful to this world.

  • Getting rid of fears. Timothy will talk about how to overcome such fears as a loss of career and future retirement, his business and constant income.

  • Gaining freedom of choice. True value and wealth are in the ability to choose employment, time for work and a place to live.

  • Setting unrealistic goals. The most difficult task is much more achievable than it seems at first glance. If you set yourself an unreal goal, you will have far fewer competitors on the way to achieving it.

  • Clear choice of goals. There can be several goals, but all of them must meet the main requirements: to be specific and based on your interests, on what really fascinates you.

  • Identify specific steps to achieve the goal. Calculate the possible losses in both cases: if you move to the goal and if you refuse to achieve it. Highlight the main thing, discard fears and act right now.

  • Refusal of work, which takes too much time. Strive for independence, to move to a remote job, and if you can not - boldly quit. The author is convinced that having decided on such an act, you will find new ways to pay bills and make savings.

Be sure to let yourself rest. Do not rush, do not try to embrace the immense in a long-awaited vacation, just live. This will be useful not only emotionally, but also financially: you will significantly reduce the waste of spending on excursions, accommodation and meals.

Step II: ELIMINATION

The second part of the book is really devoted to a detailed analysis of the liquidation process. On the way to liberation and increase your own effectiveness, you will need to remove from your life everything that complicates it and takes away the lion's share of your time.

The main recommendations given in the three chapters of the section:

  • Increase your productivity and free up time. Set yourself a tight time frame, define a specific amount of time for each task. By acting in this way, you will soon realize that the allotted time is enough to do the work that used to take you the whole day before.

  • Be more effective. Act rationally, try to solve any problem on the way to the goal in the most "economical" way.

  • Remember the law of Pareto. 20% of all costs lead to 80% of the result. Be guided by this rule in everything: when choosing partners, clients, advertising and sources of income.

  • Set the deadline. Cut off all tasks of low importance and limit the time to cut off anything that might distract you.

  • Check your own productivity. Do not allow yourself to waste your time in the work. Three times a day, check that you are not distracted and really busy solving the tasks.

  • Apply Pareto's law and to information. Be selective, "grasp" only the most important and concrete, and learn how to read quickly.

  • Do not let your time be wasted. Reading letters, drawing up reports, attending meetings, coordinating actions and obtaining permits - minimize to a minimum, or better completely get rid of what imperceptibly takes away from you a huge part of the time.

Remember: maximum autonomy, high efficiency and constant self-control are the main principles of a person who wants to be the master of one's own life.

Step III: AUTOMATION

From the third part of the book you will learn what is outsourcing your own life, and also what business directions are easiest to supervise remotely.

According to Timothy Ferris, just three simple steps can release a huge amount of your time:

  • Elimination of superfluous
  • Automation or maximum simplification of what can not be eliminated
  • Delegating the most time-consuming tasks, with the establishment of exact time and requirements

However, by delegating one's authority one should not forget about security measures. Passing your tasks to one of your colleagues, make sure that this person does not have access to your personal information: passwords, accounts or documents.

In the last chapters of this part of the book, the author willingly shares the most promising, in his opinion, directions in business. Ferris describes in detail steps to find his niche, helps to clearly articulate the idea and determines the necessary conditions for the effective positioning of goods or services in the modern market.

Step IV: THE BEGINNING OF A NEW LIFE

And the most important tests are already over. It's up to the little thing to start a new life. In the last part of his book, Timothy Ferris will help you decide to quit your job and escape from the office.

For overcoming the formed feeling of emptiness and uncertainty, the author suggests starting to lead an active lifestyle, enjoying every moment, devoting free time to their own hobbies.

One of the best ways to fill the vacated time Ferris considers traveling. Having started to get acquainted with the surrounding world, you can feel how bright life can be, understand your true destiny and learn to live in harmony with yourself.

In addition, from the last chapter of this part of the book you will learn about the thirteen typical mistakes that the "new rich" make and how they can be avoided.

Summary

I recommend Timothy Ferris's book "The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich", live anywhere and grow rich "to anyone who wants to escape from the multitasking cycle, focus on the most important thing, realize their potential and afford to live a truly full life.
