The Super Mario movie is one that I feel is one of the most mixed films I've seen in its reception, from the surprise of its super mediocre reception by critics on Rotten Tomatoes and such, to the high regard it received from audiences (albeit with a few nitpicks), and even from some of my friends after leaving the movie to the point that they were discussing it for about 15 minutes after leaving the movie yesterday.
Several people were not entertained by the premise despite its presentation, and others felt the film had no coherence other than being a commercial for references, but some enjoyed it despite that, or even enjoyed it without knowing about these references. After thinking a bit about what the experience was like before, during and after the movie, I could say the following for myself:
The Mario movie was like watching my childhood years and many more with the plumber being rekindled as something special after time away from those new games.
I went to see it yesterday with several friends and my brother, and now I come with what I have to say for my part about this long awaited movie.
La película de Super Mario es una que siento que es de las películas más mixtas que he visto en su recepción, desde la sorpresa de su recepción super mediocre por los críticos especializados en Rotten Tomatoes y demás, hasta la gran estima que recibió por parte del público (aunque con unos pocos detalles), y hasta de algunos de mis amigos tras salir de la película al punto de que se estuvo discutiendo eso como 15 minutos al salir de verla ayer.
Varias personas no fueron entretenidos por la premisa a pesar de su presentación, y otros sintieron que la película no tenía más coherencia que ser un comercial de referencias, pero algunos lo disfrutaron a pesar de eso, o hasta lo disfrutaron sin conocer de estas referencias. Después de pensarlo un poco sobre cómo fue la experiencia antes, durante y después de la película, podría decir lo siguiente de mi parte:
La película de Mario fue como si hubiera visto mis años de infancia y muchos más con el plomero siendo reavivados como algo especial después de tiempo alejado de sus juegos nuevos.
La fui a ver ayer con varios amigos y mi hermano, y ahora vengo con lo que tengo decir por mi parte sobre esta película tan esperada.
Simple but with things to find
Simple pero con cosas que encontrar
While its plot can be seen as basic and the movie doesn't last very long with its scenes (90 minutes nothing more), it's interesting that at least there are some interesting twists to what you would expect from "Plumber goes to rescue the princess", like the backstory of Mario and Luigi as plumbers and even family, how Mario gets separated from Luigi and ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom, the theme of Mario having training arcs and all with Peach as the action character (unlike most of the games where she appears, with the exception of Super Mario Bros 2, Super Princess Peach, Super Mario 3D World and of course, the Smash Bros games, and a Mario manga), how Donkey Kong has a definite more aggressive but confident personality, and Bowser seeking conquest only to marry Peach (which is taken from Super Mario Odyssey).
Oh, and Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew does show up, not for much but he does end up having some importance during the first few minutes and with an interesting design.
This movie if one that goes in a simple way that can entertain, but obviously if you try to analyze things too much, it might start to lose a bit of its charm. It's a movie ABOUT Mario first, and it's a movie for kids and young adults second, so it does make sense that it depends on your tastes and willingness to enjoy the movie for what it is of whether you like it or not, as it doesn't seek to give a message and great character developments like Puss in Boots The Last Wish, or for comparison to another Illumination movie, My Favorite Villain.
If you were planning on seeing the trailers for the film (in the very unlikely event that you haven't already), you might be better off holding off on seeing them so that at least most of the things it shows are of surprise. The story is arguably about as simple as a Mario story can be and trailers reflect a lot of this, which is the part where the most criticism comes in expecting to see something with more spice in that aspect, but at least there are other aspects that help cover that part.
Mientas que su trama se puede ver como básica y la película llega a no durar mucho con sus escenas (90 minutos nada más), es interesante que al menos haya unos giros interesantes para lo que esperarias de "Plomero va a rescatar a la princesa", como el trasfondo de Mario y Luigi como plomeros y hasta familia, como Mario se separa de Luigi y termina en el Reino Champiñon, el tema de Mario teniendo arcos de entrenamiento y todo con Peach como la personaje de acción (a diferencia de la mayoría de los juegos donde aparece, con la excepción de Super Mario Bros 2, Super Princess Peach, Super Mario 3D World y por supuesto, los juegos de Smash Bros, y un manga de Mario), como Donkey Kong tiene una personalidad definida más agresiva pero confiada, y Bowser buscando la conquista solo para casarse con Peach (que es sacado de Super Mario Odyssey).
Ah, y Foreman Spike de Wrecking Crew si aparece, no para muchas cosas pero si termina teniendo algo de importancia durante los primeros minutos y con un diseño interesante.
Esta película si es una que va de forma simple que puede entretener, pero obviamente si intentas analizar mucho las cosas, podría empezar a perder un poco el encanto. Es una película SOBRE Mario primero, y es segundo una película para niños y jóvenes, así que si tiene sentido que dependa de tus gustos y disposición a disfrutar la película por lo que es de si te gusta o no, ya que no busca dar un mensaje y gran desarrollos de personajes como El Gato con Botas El Último Deseo, o para comparación con otra película de Illumination, Mi Vilano Favorito.
Si pensabas ver los trailers de la película (en el caso muy difícil de que no lo hayas hecho ya), quizás sea mejor que aguantes de no verlas para que al menos la mayoría de las cosas que muestra sean de sorpresa. La historia podría decirse que es efectivamente de lo más simple que puede ser una historia de Mario y los trailers reflejan gran parte de esto, lo cual es la parte donde vienen más críticas esperando ver algo con más sazón en ese aspecto, pero al menos hay otros aspectos que ayudan a cubrir esta parte.

From what I heard in the trailers, the English voices seemed to sound good, Chris Pratt being the one everyone was worried about being the voice of Mario instead of Charles Martinet, but I thought his performance was fine along with the rest, Jack Black as Bowser obviously stealing the show with his presence and how much he enjoyed playing the character. Including THAT moment he has in the movie. I saw the movie in Latin dub but even so everything was pretty good and close to what the English voices would be like in several parts.
The visual presentation is spectacular, and the soundtrack goes from functional for what you would expect in dramatic moments of the movie...to pretty incredible with how they mix those not very distinctive but functional orchestras with musical references to the Mario franchise that made my hair stand on end.
The most contentious part without a doubt is the use of licensed music in the film. I would say that of the ones that played, only one I felt was a bit odd in the scene they used, while another was okay but could also be better, and the rest I either liked or it was ESA song.
Now the question is...what is the movie for someone who grew up with Mario?
It's already pretty well known that the movie uses references to not only Mario games quite a bit, but even some other Mario properties and adaptations, such as the theme of Mario being in Brooklyn in the real world but being taken to the Mushroom Kingdom being something seen in several of the Mario TV cartoons. And the thing is, while I did say that this movie might not be for everyone if you're not willing to look up references (or don't know them) and you're also not willing to not think so much about what's in front of it...I grew up with a Nintendo 64.
And with everything that came after: Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, Gamecube, Wii...those who know me here from before should even know that I have a blessed Luigi plushie; I think it should be more than clear that I grew up with Mario, and it was only by bad luck that I didn't get to have a Wii U as I wanted long ago. By the time the Switch came out, it would no longer be possible to own one at least in the present economic situation where I live, but it was still great to see Odyssey released back then.
De lo que escuché en los trailers, las voces en inglés parecían escucharse bien, Chris Pratt siendo ese del cual todos se preocupaban por ser la voz de Mario en vez de Charles Martinet, pero me parecía bien su interpretación junto con el resto, Jack Black como Bowser obviamente robándose el show con su presencia y lo mucho que disfrutaba hacer del personaje. Incluyendo ESE momento que tiene en la película. Yo vi la película en doblaje latino pero aun así todo fue bastante bien y cercano a como serían las voces en inglés en varias partes.
La presentación visual es espectacular, y la banda sonora va desde lo funcional para lo que esperarías en momentos dramáticos de la película...hasta bastante increíbles con como mezclan esas orquestras no muy distintivas pero funcionales con referencias musicales a la franquicia de Mario que hacían que se me pusieran los pelos de punta.
La parte más contenciosa sin lugar a duda es el uso de música licenciada en la película. Diría que de las que sonaron, solo una sentía que era algo extraña en la escena en la que usaron, mientras que otra estaba bien pero también podía ser mejor, y el resto o me gustaban o era ESA canción.
Ahora la pregunta es...¿Qué es la película para alguien que creció con Mario?
Es ya bastante sabido que la película usa bastante las referencias no solo a juegos de Mario, sino hasta a algunas otras propiedades y adaptaciones de Mario, como la temática de Mario estando en Brooklyn en el mundo real pero siendo llevado al Reino Champiñon siendo algo visto en varias de las caricaturas de Mario para televisión. Y la cosa es que mientras que si dije que esta película podría no ser para todos si no estás dispuesto a buscar referencias (o no las conoces) y tampoco estás dispuesto a no pensar tanto en lo que tiene de frente...yo crecí con una Nintendo 64.
Y con todo lo que vino después: Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, Gamecube, Wii...los que me conozcan aquí desde antes hasta deberían saber que tengo un bendito peluche de Luigi; creo que debería estar más que claro que he crecido con Mario, y solo fue por mala suerte fue que no llegué a tener una Wii U como quería hace mucho. Ya para la época en la que salió la Switch, ya no sería posible poder tener una al menos en la situación económica presente en donde vivo, pero aún fue genial ver el lanzamiento de Odyssey en aquel entonces.
But that said, I had already mentioned at the beginning how this can be a movie that relies more on its references and simple premise (and that you like them, because it's understandable how mediocre the movie can be if you don't like them).
With that clear context both from the movie and from my growing up with many Mario games....
...My comments on that are going to have to stay in the spoiler zone, because just as I went crazy with the references while watching the movie, I couldn't bear to let you know almost every single thing I saw in them.
Pero dicho eso, ya había mencionado al principio de cómo puede ser esta una película que dependa más en sus referencias y simple premisa (y que estos te agraden, porque es entendible que resulte mediocre la película si no te agradan).
Con ese contexto claro tanto de la película como de mi crecimiento con muchos juegos de Mario...

And speaking of the Luma Saxophone, that blue Lumalee that appeared in the movie is pretty funny for literally being called a psychopath by the characters by saying things like "there will only be rest with sweet death" and enjoying being lowered into lava. It was my brother's favorite thing about the whole movie, because obviously something so off-base in that style would get the most laughs from him (but it got a chuckle from me too).
My favorite part is a tie between two things:
The first is everything that had the Karts driving around DK Island (with the Double Dash-like backseat carts) except for having Take on Me playing in the scene (it's good song.... but just imagine trying to play a DK track in Mario Kart with that song playing; it makes no sense plus there was an original song composed for this scene that wasn't used), when the Mario Kart music plays as they see the karts and AC/DC's Thunderstruck starts playing with the bouncer assembling everyone's Kart (and Toad with his monster truck) and they go through the madness of Rainbow Lane with that part that sounds like the Super Nintendo track and when the Blue Koopa turns into a Blue Carapace.
The second is when Mario decides to fight again despite his fear as Bowser rampages through the city, Luigi saves Mario from being consumed in fire while trying to grab the star (GO LUIGI GO GO GO GO GO) and they end up grabbing the superstar with the mythical tune playing as they go on a rampage with Bowser in tandem circling him by the tail just like Mario always had to take down Bowser in Super Mario 64 (whoever came up with that idea is a genius, I don't care what anyone says, he's a complete genius), ending with the whole town celebrating for the victory of the Super Mario Brothers, and the Lumalee's saxophone solo at the end being the icing on the cake as we finally heard two uninterrupted minutes of Mario music from various games.
The only thing we were robbed of in the movie when we saw it...is that they didn't even bother to let us see the post-credits. Unlike John Wick 4 which in the literal theater we saw when the movie jumped from the middle of the credits to the end of the credits just for us to see that last scene, here we waited several minutes for them to finish to see what was at the end but they just turned off the screen for us to leave.
But well, outside of that, Luigi having his moments and at least one last bit of limelight, Mario having a story with his family but still overcoming what he carried (as simple or predictable as it was), Peach doing much more than being captured by commanding her troops to battle Bowser and even revealing herself with an ice flower against Bowser while trying to get him to marry her, Bowser being Bowser, and the male-voiced Toad being male-voiced Toad.
We thought then there were no post-credits, but I found out today that there WERE post-credits giving a hint that Yoshi might end up being more important than a small cameo in the next movie.
Y hablando del Luma Saxofón, ese Lumalee azul que aparecía en la película es bastante graciosa para ser literalmente llamado un psicópata por los personajes al decir cosas como "solo habrá descanso con la dulce muerte" y disfrutar siendo bajado en lava. Fue la cosa favorita de toda la película para mi hermano, porque obviamente algo tan fuera de base en ese estilo sería lo que más le daría risa a él (pero también me dio risa a mi).
Mi parte favorita es un empate entre dos cosas:
La primera es todo lo que llevaba los Karts conduciendo por la isla de DK (con los carritos con asientos traseros a lo Double Dash) excepto por tener Take on Me sonando en la escena (es buena canción...pero solo imagina intentar jugar una pista de DK en Mario Kart con esa canción sonando; no tiene sentido además de que había una canción original compuesta para esta escena que no se utilizó), cuando suena la música de Mario Kart mientras ven los karts y empieza a sonar Thunderstruck de AC/DC con el gorila armando el Kart de cada uno (y Toad con su camión monstruo) y van por la locura de la Senda Arco Iris con esa parte que suena como la pista de Super Nintendo y cuando el Koopa Azul se convierte en un Caparazón Azul.
La segunda es cuando Mario decide pelear de nuevo a pesar de su temor mientras que Bowser arrasa la ciudad, Luigi salva a Mario de ser consumido en fuego al intentar agarrar la estrella (VAMO LUIGI) y terminan agarrando la superestrella con la mítica tonada sonando mientras que hacen destrozos con Bowser en conjunto dandole vueltas por la cola justo como Mario siempre tenía que acabar con Bowser en Super Mario 64 (al que se le ocurrió esa idea es un genio, no me importa que digan, es un completo genio), terminando con toda la ciudad celebrando por la victoria de los Super Mario Brothers, y el solo de saxofón del Lumalee al final siendo la guinda del pastel ya que finalmente escuchamos dos minutos sin interrumpir de música de Mario de varios juegos.
Lo único que nos robaron en la película cuando la vimos...es que ni se molestaron en dejarnos ver los post-créditos. A diferencia de John Wick 4 que en el cine literal se vió cuando la película saltó desde la mitad de los créditos hasta el final de estos solo para que vieramos esa última escena, aquí esperamos varios minutos a que terminaran para ver que había al final pero solo apagaron la pantalla para que nos fueramos.
Pensabamos que entonces no había post-creditos, pero me enteré hoy de que SÍ habían post-créditos dando una pista que Yoshi podría terminar siendo más importante que un pequeño cameo en la próxima película.
Pero bueno, fuera de eso, Luigi tener sus momentos y al menos un último trozo de protagonismo, Mario tener una historia con su familia pero aun así superar lo que llevaba (por más simple o predecible que fuera), Peach haciendo mucho más que ser capturada al comandar sus tropas para la batalla de Bowser y hasta revelarse con una flor de hielo contra Bowser mientras que intentaba que se casara con él, Bowser siendo Bowser, y el Toad con voz de macho siendo Toad con voz de macho.
Conclusion
This movie is possible to be seen in a number of ways.
For the skeptic, with high expectations for a movie of super epic proportions and story, or simply without much attachment or knowledge of Mario with all the things he does assuming you know they are things of game logic (like losing your power when hit), it can be understood to be mediocre or just a reference box for Mario stuff rather than a solid movie.
For the one who doesn't expect much or has no problem with being entertained by something simple, the movie does deliver and is definitely a perfect one to watch for both kids (with that small exception of the psycho Luma 🤣) and families and friends who want to have a fun time with good old Mario, which is the case for a large portion of those who saw this movie.
But for those who have always wanted to see the famous plumber on the big screen, and have recently become familiar with it or have been accompanied by his adventures (2D games, 3D games, Mario Party, Mario Kart, sports Mario, Smash Bros)...besides the entertainment it can give for the uninitiated, seeing the references fly while watching the plumber do his best both visually and musically is something that brings to the surface those feelings we must have had in those first moments we spent playing these lifelong classics.
And for me...it was crazy to see all of that which was like rekindling so many beautiful memories with my own experiences with the games, with my brothers I grew up with who are the reason I was able to grow up with so much Mario, and with the things I played with my friends for so long.
From Super Mario 64 on a real Nintendo 64, Super Mario World in its GBA version on a real cartridge, completing both Mario Kart Super Circuit and Super Mario Kart on my PSP while suffering through the last Rainbow Road race I managed to do on my last attempt at 100cc and hearing the sweet victory, the intense nostalgia I get from Super Mario Galaxy alongside the Wii, and the many hours I put into Super Mario 3D Land...watching a movie that had so many nods to all of that and on top of that it was fun on top of it all....
I think this is the first official Nintendo thing I've seen in a while that I could say that felt like it was made extra special for those who grew up with Mario, beyond his image as the company mascot, much more than the half effort that was Super Mario 3D All Stars as a limited release, and unlike the 3D World and Odyssey games that I haven't had a chance to play, it's something completely new from Mario that I was finally able to enjoy with all my heart.
So I'd say it's a movie you can try to watch any way you want. At worst it should at least entertain through one aspect of the film or another...and at best (which is most likely if you've been through many of the plumber's adventures) you'll float out of the theater with what you've just seen. A movie that while its criticisms can be understood, it is one that can also be understood for the insane appreciation it has had from many people around the world, and that if there is one thing many of us can agree on is that it didn't last as long as expected...so we have to wait for the inevitable sequel with the incredible box office success it achieved.

Para el escéptico, con muchas expectativas para una película de proporciones y una historia super épica, o simplemente sin mucho apego o conocimiento de Mario con todas las cosas que hace asumiendo que sabes que son cosas de la lógica de los juegos (como perder tu poder al ser golpeado), puede entenderse que sea mediocre o solo una caja de referencias para cosas de Mario más que una película sólida.
Para el que no espera mucho o no tiene problemas con entretenerse con algo simple, la película sí que cumple con lo que quiere y es definitivamente una perfecta para ver tanto para niños (con esa pequeña excepción del Luma psicópata 🤣) como para familias y amigos que quieran pasar un rato divertido con el viejo Mario, lo cual es el caso para gran parte de quienes vieron esta película.
Pero para el que haya querido ver desde siempre al famoso plomero en la pantalla grande, y se haya familiarizado recientemente con este o lleve mucho pero mucho tiempo acompañado por sus aventuras (los juegos 2D, los juegos 3D, los Mario Party, los Mario Kart, los Mario de deportes, Smash Bros)...además del entretenimiento que puede dar para el que no esté iniciado, ver las referencias volar mientras que ves al plomero hacer su mejor esfuerzo tanto visuales como musicales son algo que pone a flor de piel esos sentimientos que habremos tenido en esos primeros momentos que pasamos jugando estos clásicos de toda la vida.
Y para mí...fue una locura ver todo eso que fue como reavivar tantos hermosos recuerdos con mis propias experiencias con los juegos, con mis hermanos con los que crecí que son la razón por la cual pude crecer con tanto Mario, y con las cosas que jugué con mis amigos por tanto tiempo.
Desde Super Mario 64 en una Nintendo 64 de verdad, Super Mario World en su versión de GBA en un cartucho de verdad, completarme tanto Mario Kart Super Circuit y Super Mario Kart en mi PSP mientras sufría con la última carrera de Rainbow Road que logré hacer en mi último intento en 100cc y escuchar la dulce victoria, la nostalgia intensa que me da Super Mario Galaxy junto al Wii, y las muchas horas que le dediqué a Super Mario 3D Land...ver una película que tenía tantos guiños a todo eso y encima divertía encima de todo...
Creo que esto es lo primero que había visto en tiempo que podría decir oficial de Nintendo que se sintió que fue hecho extra especial para los que crecieron con Mario, más allá que su imagen como mascota de la compañía, mucho más que el medio esfuerzo que fue Super Mario 3D All Stars como lanzamiento limitado, y a diferencia de los juegos de 3D World y Odyssey que no he tenido la oportunidad de jugarlos, es algo completamente nuevo de Mario que finalmente pude disfrutar con todas las ganas.
Así que diría que es una película que puedes intentar ver de la forma que sea. En el peor caso debería al menos entretener mediante uno u otro aspecto de la película...y en el mejor caso (que es lo más probable si has pasado por muchas de las aventuras del plomero) te vas a ir flotando del cine con lo que acabas de ver. Una película que si bien sus críticas pueden entenderse, es una que también puede entenderse el insano aprecio que ha tenido de mucha gente alrededor del mundo, y que si hay algo que muchos podemos estar de acuerdo es que no duró tanto como se hubiera esperado...así que toca esperar que la inevitable secuela con el increíble éxito taquillero que logró.
