When we hear "intelligence" we associate it with someone intellectual, with broad knowledge and even good grades in evaluations. However, that word is amalgamated with other words so that the meaning can be much broader than the first one that came to mind. I want to talk about that meaning, and how children are able to demonstrate it based on just one example I experienced. Please join me.
Think about this. One child solves a math problem that other children his age can't do. Another child solves a conflict between his other two siblings by resorting to reason and insight Who is smarter?
You might answer that they are both smart, and you are probably right, because they are both showing their outstanding abilities but in different fields. It's like wanting to compare grapes with melons. So, when we talk about intelligent children, for me, we are not only talking about children with good grades, but also with good qualities and social skills. I will talk about this second group.
A few years ago I was cleaning the garden of a public place. There was a type of grass that allowed a vine-like weed to spread underneath it. Besides being very difficult to reach, when trying to pull it out of the ground it stretched and was easy to break off before its roots could get off the ground. So it was quite a chore to do patiently in the heat of a clear day. A little girl was watching me.
About ten feet away was a vacant and somewhat neglected lot, separated by a fence. Since I was somewhat tired from the heat and the uncomfortable position, every time I managed to gather some weeds in my fist I would throw them over the fence into the vacant lot. My logic was, "It's organic weeds. It will scorch and disintegrate. That ground is still dirty. No one is watching me.
The girl came up to me and asked what I was doing. I said, "Cleaning up the garden". And she said, "Are you cleaning by making someone else dirty?"
I didn't know what to say. Her logic was clear, blunt and better than mine, obviously. And I think the worst punishment was her sweet tone of voice when she spoke to me. For me it was a very intelligent question, based on some elementary principles and values. Like what?
Love for others. To her, it was inconceivable that I would be solving a problem in a way that would create a problem for someone else. It would be like trying to take advantage of someone else.
Honesty. I suppose she would see that I was solving a task in the easiest way and perhaps I could get away with any claims.
Laboriousness. If my work warranted more effort, well, it was good that I did it, it's part of being a good worker.
Was this girl smart? For me, yes, since she handled principles, values and concepts like these to make good decisions and also to guide others. Intelligence is that, applying learned knowledge to solve, guide, teach, overcome, among other things. This is a lesson I did not forget, and hopefully never will.
This girl did not manage to be at the top of her class. She even struggled with some of the subjects in the curriculum. But she continues to make intelligent decisions, with human and spiritual quality, managing to stay afloat even though the problems keep coming, and not exactly math problems. I am sure that her intelligence will continue to lead her to sure success.
We want more children like this. It is not about being smart just for getting good grades, but for their human qualities and putting into practice basic principles of life. That is why the education they are getting at home is important, with social, human, spiritual values.... If they decide to apply this knowledge in their lives, they will surely have a bright, long and happy life. That is the most intelligent thing to do.
Cuando escuchamos "inteligencia" lo asociamos con alguien intelectual, con conocimiento amplio y hasta buenas calificaciones en las evaluaciones. Sin embargo, esa palabra se amalgama con otras más logrando que el sentido pueda ser mucho más amplio que ese primero que se nos vino a la mente. Quiero hablar de ese sentido, y cómo los niños son capaces de demostrarlo basándome en sólo un ejemplo que viví. Por favor, acompáñame.
Piensa en esto. Un niño resuelve un problema de matemática que otros niños de su edad no pueden hacerlo. Otro niño resuelve un conflicto entre sus otros dos hermanos recurriendo a la razón y la perspicacia ¿Quién es más inteligente?
Tal vez respondas que los dos son inteligentes, y probablemente tengas razón, porque ambos están mostrando sus capacidades sobresalientes pero en diferentes campos. Es como querer comparar uvas con melones. Por eso, cuando hablamos de niños inteligentes, para mi, no estamos hablando sólo de niños con buenas calificaciones, sino también de buenas cualidades y habilidades sociales. Hablaré de éste segundo grupo.
Hace unos años estaba limpiando el jardín de un lugar público. Había un tipo de grama que permitía que una maleza de tipo enredadera se propagara por debajo de ella. Además de ser muy difícil de alcanzar, al tratar de arrancarla de la tierra se estiraba y era fácil de romperse antes de que sus raíces se despegaran de la tierra. Así que era toda una tarea que había que hacer pacientemente bajo el calor de un día despejado. Una niña me observaba.
A unos tres metros de distancia estaba un terreno baldío y algo descuidado, separado por una cerca. En vista que estaba algo cansado por el calor y la posición incómoda, cada vez que lograba reunir algo de maleza en el puño de mi mano lo arrojaba al terreno baldío por encima de la cerca. Mi lógica era: "Es maleza orgánica. Se chamuscará y desintegrará. Aquel terreno igual está sucio. Nadie me está viendo".
La niña se me acercó y me preguntó qué estaba haciendo. Le respondí: "Limpiando el jardín". Y ella me respondió: "¿Estás limpiando ensuciándole a otra persona?".
No supe qué responderle. Su lógica era clara, contundente y mejor que la mía, obviamente. Y creo que el peor castigo fue su dulce tono de voz al hablarme. Para mí fue una pregunta muy inteligente, basado en algunos principios y valores elementales. ¿Como cuáles?
Amor al prójimo. Para ella, era inconcebible que yo estuviera resolviendo un problema de tal forma que generara un problema para otra persona. Sería como tratar de aprovecharme de otro.
Honestidad. Supongo que ella vería que yo estaba resolviendo una tarea de la forma más fácil y quizás podría salir impune de cualquier reclamo.
Laboriosidad. Si mi trabajo ameritaba más esfuerzo, pues era bueno que lo hiciera, es parte de un buen trabajador.
¿Era ésta niña inteligente? Para mí, sí, puesto que manejaba principios, valores y conceptos como estos para tomar buenas decisiones y también guiar a otros. La inteligencia es eso, aplicar el conocimiento aprendido para resolver, guiar, enseñar, sobreponerse, entre otras cosas. Ésta es una lección que no olvidé, y ojalá nunca lo haga.
Ésta niña no logró ser la mejor de su clase. Incluso, tuvo dificultades con algunas de las materias del pensum. Pero sigue tomando decisiones inteligentes, con calidad humana y espiritual, logrando mantenerse a flote a pesar de que los problemas siguen llegando, y no precisamente problemas matemáticos. Estoy seguro que su inteligencia seguirá llevándola a un éxito seguro.
Queremos más niños así. No se trata de ser inteligentes sólo por sacar buenas notas, sino por su calidad humana y poner en práctica principios básicos de la vida. Por eso es importante la educación que se les está haciendo llegar en el hogar, con valores sociales, humanos, espirituales... Si ellos deciden aplicar este conocimiento en sus vidas, seguramente tendrán una vida brillante, larga y dichosa. Eso es lo más inteligente.
