Property In Puerto Rico: An Investor's Dream?

Above is a picture of me relaxing in a hammock on my grandparent's beautiful property in PR.

If you've been keeping up with news in the US you know that the economy in Puerto Rico has not been doing well; in fact, the island may have to file for bankruptcy. Tons of islanders are fleeing to the US mainland, and many that are staying in the island are seeing their beautiful homes fall into disarray and blight take over their neighborhoods. This is a tragedy, as the people and the island are warm and welcoming - but - is it also an opportunity to do good while making a great investment?

Here is my thinking: Puerto Rico is a US territory. For years Puerto Rican's have been voting on staying a territory, going independent, or becoming a US state. With the economic trauma occurring right now, citizen sentiment has shifted to wanting to become a US state. Puerto Rican's have recently held a vote with the majority of those that voted wanting statehood. If the US accepts this call for statehood, the islands economy would instantly triple overnight, and those that own property in PR would reap the benefits.

Personally, I would love it if PR would become a state for the following reasons:

  1. Hawaii would finally not be the only tropical state in the union, giving island lovers like me another option when deciding where to retire :)

  2. Right now for as little as 20k, you can buy property in PR and sit on it. Imagine the future returns if PR becomes a state and mainlanders decide to move to the island!

  3. I think PR being a US territory is a BS deal, and always has been. These are US citizens without representation. Let's shit or get off the pot!

What do you guys think? Should PR become a state?
