French President Emmanuel Macron said he was in favor of economic sanctions against European Union (EU) countries that refused to receive migrants.

During a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the French President said: "We can not have countries that overwhelmingly benefit from EU solidarity and overwhelmingly claim their national selfishness when it comes to migratory issues".
Emmanuel Macron showed himself "in favor of the existence of sanctions applied in case of non-solidarity (...), that the conditions on this matter be placed on the financing of structural aid", and said: "I am very much in favor of mechanisms that take this into account, it is a debate that will come in due course".
The French head of state and the new Spanish Prime Minister also expressed support for the creation of closed reception centers in European countries, on arrival of migrants, to study each case with a view to granting asylum or accompanying return to the country of origin.
