Politics is not meant to be a battle to the death.

Take a look at this fundraising email entitled "Kevin McCarthy GONE." It was sent out today over Nancy Pelosi’s signature. Notice how Speaker Pelosi – or whoever wrote this for her – depicts Republicans.

There’s no sense here of the GOP as the loyal opposition, as people equally committed to the welfare of the nation but with a different perspective. No, the battle between the parties portrayed here is a war between Good (the Democrats) and Evil (the Republicans). And, as the saying goes, all is fair in love and war: “Republicans will stop at nothing to take power” but “our Democrats will NEVER let them steal back what we’ve won.” “[W]e will NEVER let them win…” What does that even mean?

This is not the way politics is supposed to be conducted in this country. It’s not supposed to be a battle to the death. Sometimes they win and sometimes we win. President Clinton (D) was followed in the White House by Bush (R), then by Obama (D), then by Trump (R), and now by Biden (D). It tends to go back and forth like that, every four or eight years.

"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection." -- Lincoln's First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1861
