It was 1936, when many churches in Kyiv were destroyed by communists. The anonymous photograph shows the dismantling of Byzantine mosaics of the 12 century from St. Michael monastery church before the entire building was demolished. Today, this composition is in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. This only a fragment of a beautiful decoration, most of wich was destroyed once and for all. Thousands of churches in Ukraine have been ruined by Lenin, Stalin, Hitler during the second world war, Khrushchev, and now Putin. About 25 % of the monuments have survived to this day.
