Angelus Silesius was born into a noble Polish Lutheran family. Frustrated by the rigid Lutheranism of his era, he converted to Catholicism. He was briefly physician to the Holy Roman Emperor but soon became a monk and priest, giving away his family fortune to the needy. Today his short poems are loved by both Catholics and Protestants.
