Tightrope Walker

I'm back with another poem! In theory I want to upload something different every now and then but for now I'm sticking with the poetry apparently!

TIGHTROPE WALKER

She was born a tightrope walker of the line between your eyes
She grew taut with the clench of your brows, when your smile was your disguise
A long scarf after a long night pinned against a wall by you
'Get out of my sight' meant 'don't come home after school or I'll hurt you'
To stay or to go, like the other parent she didn't know
It was a warzone in her head and in her heart
Like the violent steaks of purple in your storm-tossed art
The way a bruise spread under your fingers as easily as a painting
That time you sent her to school without food for a week and she fainted
The questions from the doctors and the police that followed
After, the taste of the scalding water you tried to make her swallow
She knew how much you loved her, and I thought that's why she stayed
For the days of homemade cupcakes, pink wine and lemonade
And if she's honest there were more of those, more than the broken days
Months without whiskey and with a clear gaze
But then back it would come, like a rush, a tide, a wave
Back would flood in your broken drain of discontent on the back of a horse called craving
Back then she was drowning, not waving.

Thank you for watching, let me know what you think!
