I dream

Indian teenagers are deprived off the right to fall in love by their parents and family. Falling in love is almost considered as a sin in our country. Maybe one day we’d get a chance to love freely and our love not be considered a shameful act. This poem, tries to highlight the problems faced by young lovers. The casteism, moral policing and lying which are synonymous to the Indian dating scenario.

I dream of a day when our country will be free
Of all the pride and prejudices
Against young lovers lost in romance
Sitting on a bench and holding hands

I dream of a day when our countrymen would say
“Oh look how cute a couple they are”
Right now we just get awkward stares
And loath and lustful eyes of theirs

I dream of a day when our parents would say
“Enjoy your time with your lover !”
Right now we have to run and hide
Lest they find out and kill us in the name of honor

I dream of a day when our love will not be a sin
Or an act to be ashamed about
When kissing isn’t a crime to be beaten up for
And when caste doesn’t divide

I dream of a day when we’ll be free
To love and love like other teenagers can
But that’s a long way to go
And till our love will be hidden and strong
