Sup you Steemy Party People! So I'm driving along last Friday night, 12-22-17, and at 1729 I notice something out of the corner of my eye in San Pedro, CA. I turned around and I have never seen anything like it before in my life. So I pulled over and got out of my car with my camera. It doesn't want to take movies for some reason, too dark? But I got the following 12 photos. These pics do not do justice to what I saw that night.
Having never seen an ICBM before, the thought had crossed my mind about the red phones and the codes and if this was finally the end. Luckily the internet made it clear it was an Elon Musk SpaceX rocket that launched 10 satellites.
I wish I knew beforehand, to set up a tripod, to get into full manual mode away from the stupid street lights. But this is what I have. I start with cropped versions and in the end are the originals.
We think of sunsets as purple and pink but the rocket exhaust was bright white. Imagine a white jelly fish in pitch black water with a spot light on it. Sunset had only occurred half an hour earlier and I guess the exhaust was so high up that it was an incredible white color from the sun. Then, in the trailing dome the booster was sputtering before it dropped into the pacific creating a show of its own. The launch was from Vandenberg Air Force Base between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara but a friend in San Diego got a decent pic on his cell phone. Even Arizona got some great views. Enjoy.
