Coming up to 2 months ago now, South East Queensland saw the approach of severe tropical cyclone Oma and the resulting swell pump. When the cyclones hit, due to the wind direction the more north facing Superbank (Snapper Rocks to Kirra) has the pick of the conditions. While the swell is often a little smaller here, it's renowned for long beautiful barrels.
Unfortunately for this event the banks at Snapper and Greenmount weren't ideal, so the surf was a bit messy there. But still some good size.
There was plenty of tow-in action going on, and a number of them were fined for dangerous piloting.
Further down at Kirra, where the banks were good, the size was bigger and a bit cleaner. A bit harder to photograph as the ideal position is a lot further away than the ideal position for the Superbank/Greenmount. Still, though, I managed to get some decent shots while positioned in amongst the pro surf photographers with their 400-600mm bazookas.
