This wonderful creature was taking shelter on a telephone pole rather than a proper tree. Fortunately, it was in a good position for some photographs!

This is the Japanese Oak Silkworm and is native to East Asia, not just Japan. It is cultivated and used in silk production. Some even harvest cocoons from the wild, for a particularly rare and valuable form of silk, I think it's supposed to be tougher and more resilient than the farmed silk.
It is a very large moth!
The eyespots on the wings have transparent windows!
This is the male of the species, it uses its amazing antennae to detect the pheromones of the female moth, a far more efficient way to find a mate for an insect that is active at night!
