Loka means place, happy happy .. shahdan, almost half a century ago Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX embodied the wishes of his predecessor to develop 'Bonraja' to keep the animals of the kelangenan king into a public animal kebon.Then Gembira Loka was established on 20 hectares of land in the form of protected forest, there were more than 100 species of animals of which 61 species of flora.

It is located in Gajah Wong river basin. Access to Gembira Loka is very easy with city transportation and vehicles. Initially started from some leopard animals that have been caught by locals for disturbing the village and partly derived from the slopes of Merapi whose forest is burned by hot clouds.
