Nikon D850 Video - Tony and Chelsea Northrup - Image quality comparisons.

D850

Some early image quality comparisons coming in looking at the D850 against the Canon EOS 5DR, Nikon D810, Sony A7R II, Olympus E-M1 II

From Tony and Chelsea Northrup.
Waiting for some full reviews to come out still, but the tech specs are looking excellent.

Hopefully Nikon won't have any of the quality control issues that have plagued cameras such as the D750 and the D600.

Conclusions from the video

Dynamic Range

The Nikon appears to be a winner in terms of dynamic range apart from the stacking mode in the Olympus E-M1 II

ISO

Close to other cameras, maybe better.

Admitedly the Nikon may win in a lot of features, not sure if a price comparison would be that favourable for the Nikon against the Mirrorless Sony A7R II, a new camera of choice for many enthusiasts who have jumped ship from Nikon and Canon.

Will the D850 save the DSLR?
I've been waiting a couple of years for news on this camera, and at last it's out and appears to be exceeding all expectations.

Some features that I like about the camera :

Great focusing (same as the D5, including 3d tracking, wider focus point selection
Silent mode
Tilt Screen
XQD card
High Dynamic range
Speed 7FPS or (FPS with battery grip)
Better videos (4k)
Ability to use crop view in camera (Including square format)
Nikon Lenses.
Great all round camera
Larger Viewfinder
Focus Stacking

Some downsides

The price
Canon's Dual pixel focus better in some cases.
Does it beat Sony A7R II ?
No built in flash
Nikon's snapbridge wireless can be terrible.
No GPS.
No image stabilisation (bad considering the pixel count!!!)

I'm happy to answer any questions about photography, please add a comment below and I will get back to you.

Personally I like

  • DPReview, good for technical advice on equipment and very thourough.
  • Dxomark Often seen as the industry standard when it comes to lab testing lenses and cameras.
  • Ken Rockwell's site is also very good, covering a wide range of Canon and Nikon lenses and equipment, he can be a bit overenthusiastic about some lenses though.

As well as tips, I also provide some occasional shoots from my photography, I hope that you enjoy.
