Huashi - Wanderings / Streifzüge

After I found that grave hill on one of my first outings in Huashi, I spent the next few days exploring the area. Huashi itself, though at the time considered more of a village, was an industrial town (probably a city in some countries) consisting of a number of villages.	Nachdem ich während eines meiner ersten Ausflüge in Huashi den Gräberhügel gefunden hatte, verbrachte ich die nächsten Tage damit, die Gegend näher zu erkunden. Huashi selbst, obwohl damals wohl eher als Dorf betrachtet, war eine kleine Industriestadt, aus mehreren Dörfern zusammengesetzt.

Which means that a lot of nature (well, a lot is relative, this being East China, which is densely populated) around. & unlike in bigger cities there was quite some wildlife.	Was bedeutet, daß es dort relativ viel Natur gab (relativ, da Ostchina nunmal dicht besiedelt ist). Anders als in größeren Städten gab es einiges an Getier.

A Chinese bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis) which just had caught a dragonfly. Bulbuls are very common in southern China, but I have never seen one in a city, except for Hong Kong.	Ein Chinabülbül, der gerade eine Libelle gefangen hatte. Bülbüls sind in Südchina sehr häufig, aber in Städten habe ich außer in Hongkong keine gesehen.

A nice huge cricket, probably Tarbinskiellus portentosus. They can be more than 4 cm long.	Eine hübsche, große Grille, vermutlich Tarbinskiellus portentosus. Diese Art kann über 4cm lang werden.

In the afternoon I walked to the nearby town of Zhangjiagang because there were some proper supermarkets, like Carrefour, which you couldn't find in Huashi. Which I had not considered was the lack of street lights. A rather stupid oversight, as I had to find out on the way back.	Am Nachmittag ging ich ins nahegelegene Zhangjiagang, weil es dort einige richtige Supermärkte wie Carrefour gab, die man in Huashi vergeblich suchte. Hatte allerdings nicht bedacht, daß es keine Straßenbeleuchtung gab. Dummer Fehler, wie ich auf dem Rückweg herausfinden sollte.

It was pitch black, just the cars going by providing some lighting, but more often than not blinding me. I took some pictures, because some China shill on a German forum said that I couldn't see the stars there because of light pollution. But I should have focused on the street. I half fell into a hole on the road (not beside it, on it), which was probably left open because they were still working on the sewers. &, as is common in China, it was not secured at all. Since I had no smartphone with a flashlight I used the camera to enlighten me of what I stepped into.

Es war stockdunkel, nur die vorbeifahrenden Autos spendeten etwas Licht, allzu oft aber mit Blendung verbunden. Machte einige Fotos, da ein 'Chinaliebhaber' in einem deutschen Forum behauptet hatte, man könne dort wegen der Lichtverschmutzung keine Sterne sehen. Hätte mich auf die Straße konzentrieren sollen. Ich fiel halb in ein Loch in der Straße, das vermutlich offengelassen worden war, um am Kanal zu arbeiten. &, wie das in China so ist, es war nicht abgesichert. Da ich kein Smartphone mit Lampe hatte, nutzte ich die Kamera um zu sehen, in welche Soße ich da getreten war.

Well, I survived, so another day with more wandering. The above shows the favoured transportation device in Huashi. You could see all kinds of such small trikes everywhere. Meanwhile, the more rural side of Huashi could have been quite nice:	Nunja, ich hab's überlebt, also gab es weitere Streifzüge. Oben sieht man das favorisierte Fortbewegungsmittel in Huashi. Diese kleinen Dreiräder fand man dort überall. Im eher ländlichen Teil Huashis hätte es durchaus fast idyllisch sein können:

Were it not for the garbage everywhere. Typical village life. Also typical for the area were such roof decorations:	Wenn da nicht der allgegenwärtige Müll wäre. Typisches Dorfleben. Auch typisch für die Gegend waren derartige Dachverzierungen:

Very particular for the area around Huashi are these cacti on the roof. The stork I have seen only on this one house.	Besonders in der Gegend um Huashi gab es diese Kakteen auf dem Dach. Der Storch war aber ein Einzelstück.

Thought this was a hornet, but it's probably a paper wasp, Polistes rothneyi. It was sitting on the concrete, probably trying to get some warmth, so I could take some nice photos.	Dachte, das sei eine Hornisse, aber ist wohl eine Papierwespe, Polistes rothneyi. Sie saß auf dem Beton, vermutlich um sich aufzuwärmen, was mir einige gute Bilder ermöglichte.

This time I was walking in the opposite direction of Zhangjiagang, towards Jiangyin. Beside the road was this temple, it's called Taiqingsi (泰清寺). For some reason, I never entered it, although the info board makes it look rather interesting. Google maps & Jinmapple don't even show it, although they mention another, smaller temple nearby. You can see it in satellite view of Google Maps, though.

Diesmal wanderte ich in die entgegengesetzte Richtung zu Zhangjiagang, nach Jiangyin. An der Straße gab es diesen Tempel namens Taiqingsi (泰清寺). Aus irgendeinem Grund war ich nie drin, obwohl die Infotafel ihn recht interessant erscheinen läßt. Auf Google Maps & Jinmapple gibt es ihn nicht, obwohl sie einen nahegelegenen, kleineren Tempel zeigen. Auf Googles Satellitenbildern findet man ihn jedoch.

According to the infoboard, the temple was originally built in the 3rd century, but it was destroyed & rebuilt numerous times. It got its current name in 1341 AD. The temple as you see it now is mostly from 1993. The latest rebuild of parts of it was in 2005. (A fairly new ancient temple, as usual.)	Laut Infotafel wurde der Tempel ursprünglich im 3. Jh. gebaut, aber diverse Male zerstört & wiedererrichtet. Seinen jetzigen Namen erhielt er 1341. Seine jetzige Form stammt großteils aus 1993. 2005 wurden zuletzt Gebäude hinzugefügt. (Wie üblich ein recht neuer antiker Tempel.)

The favourite mode of transportation in action. Often - as in this case - used by grandparents & parents to carry pupils. (The above may show one of mine at the time. At least the face looks familiar.)	Das Lieblingsfahrzeug in Aktion. Oft - wie hier - von Großeltern & Eltern genutzt, um Schüler zu transportieren. (Oben könnte einer der meinigen zu sehen sein. Jedenfalls kommt mir das Gesicht bekannt vor.)

A slightly cheaper trike.	Ein etwas billigeres Dreirad.

&, of course, the family scooter was also in use in Huashi. Though not as common as elsewhere.	& natürlich gab es auch in Huashi die üblichen Familienroller, wenn auch seltener als anderswo.

More village life. Most of the buildings were rather bland like this.	Mehr Dorfleben. Die meisten Gebäude waren ähnlich langweilig.

&, as is also common in China, even the smallest pieces of land are used for growing vegetables.	&, auch üblich in China, sogar der kleinste freie Grund wird zum Anbau von Gemüse genutzt.

If you didn't throw your garbage just into the landscape, you could use this. Once in a while, a garbage trike would come & a worker would shovel the trash out.	Wer seinen Müll nicht in die Landschaft warf, konnte dies benutzen. Ab & zu kam ein Mülldreirad vorbei & ein Arbeiter schaufelte den Abfall raus.
