Zcash is one of the most well-known privacy coins.
After being praised by Edward Snowden as the #1 cryptocurrency for real anonymity, Zcash has been on a steady rise.
The main feature of Zcash is the underlying technology called Zk-Snarks or (Zero-Knowledge transactions). Essentially, this allows a transaction or message to be sent to their network and verified without any data of the sender, receiver, or what was sent.
Granted, this does lead to a possible ability to create Zcash at the beginning via pre-mining and is the reason that ZenCash and ZClassic were formed.
Otherwise, ZCash is a project that we love and recently in a blog post they announced a change in their new update.
Zcash Overwinter Update - Fork "Not Expected"
In a blog post on March 2nd, 2018 the Zcash team released that their newest update Overwinter isn't expected to be a hard fork.
This update may go live as early as April 2018, on the version 1.1.0 of Zcashd with their roadmap stating their purpose:
“The purpose of Overwinter is to strengthen the protocol for future network upgrades, paving the way for the Zcash Sapling network upgrade later this year,”And over 2018 the Zcash team has a few more updates that should help solidify its position as one of the top privacy coins out there.
For users, there isn't much to do.
The developer team has said "There is no need to do anything else besides keeping your Zcash software up to date. This network update is not expected to result in a fork of the blockchain or the creation of a new currency."
Thus, with an upgrade like this, we may see Zcash start to hit previous highs; during the January spike Zcash was around $870 but currently sits around $400.
