You can use Matrix/Riot for

- file transfers
- bridge with irc Slack, Gitter, IRC, Twitter, SMS and more
Every Matrix server is called a "Synapse".
All the synapses together create one network where you can to talk with everyone else.
It doesn't matter where you create your account choose a source that you trust if you aren't going to host your own server.
If you want a real open source alternative to Discord and such, then give Matrix/Riot a try. I think you'll like it a lot.
- If you have some experience with webservers you can easily install your own Matrix Synapse on your desktop or VPS.
Riot has most of the bells and whistles you would expect from other apps like Discord and Skype.
Riot is available on most popular devices such as : IOS, Android, MacOS, Windows, Linux
