When we are old who really cares?

Working as a social care assistant I meet many people all unique, all with different circumstances, all different backgrounds, all different life stories, all different ages but just when I meet them is the time they need a little help from someone.

Not everyone I assist is elderly, is disabled or has had a troubled past, the reason for them needing assistance is so they can carry on living a life like we all would like to do. Live in your own house, dress, cook, eat, go out, have visitors, attend events and enjoy your time doing as you would like.

My job is to assist in enabling people to live an independant life as possible and only assisting with the daily tasks they need a little extra help with. However today I was picking some items up for a person who has not been able to return home for over a year, all their belongings were left to rot in the house they called home.

I did not want the person being identified but the house is like the photograph only completely full of damaged furniture, rotting food and other items we tend to think are important throughout our lives.

This is not the first person and won't be the last person for this to happen too. Do we as a society not care what happens to our family, friends, neighbours anymore? There is no one to pick their personal belongings up, no one to clean the house out just no one.

Entering the house is sureal, you can imagine what it was like when people lived in it and the sound of food steps on the tiled floor, or imagine the smell of a home cooked meal coming from the Aga. It is a sad reflection that there is no help available for these times in our lives.

I have been told that it is upto each individual to sort their own affairs out but can you imagine doing that after your third heart attack, a stroke, seizures that damage your brain more each time you have one or any other such health condition.

Sorry this is a sad post but when you are at the stage in your life where you may not be able to manage the accommodation you are in make sure someone has your back and will help you otherwise all those pocessions will become a pile of dust.
