A sparkly hoar frost morning

I woke up this morning before the sun came up, but when it did it revealed a world covered in frost.

The Old English dictionary (c. 1290) defines hoarfrost as "expressing the resemblance of white feathers of frost to an old man's beard."

To produce any frost, you need water vapor in the air and temperatures at least as cold as 32 degrees/ 0°C

It was 5F /-15C and was plenty cold enough for frost to form on trees around the spring and along the creek, where the water was warmer than the air, and water vapor was rising.

When the air is particularly moist, hoar frost forms and builds up on objects outdoors, like tree branches and fences.

By the time the sun got up the ice crystals began falling and for awhile it appeared as if it was snowing under the trees.

It was lovely while it lasted!
