Having an older version of the OS on board is pretty much par for the course for an entry-level handset, so that's not surprising
The Nokia 2 will be updated to Android 8.1 Oreo. Shocking as that may seem, the information comes straight from HMD's Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, so it's as official as it can get. The Nokia 2 is probably the cheapest phone to get a confirmation of an Oreo update coming to it in the future.
On the flip side, Sarvikas and HMD haven't mentioned anything about the update's rollout timeline, so realistically a few months could pass before we see it out in the wild. The exec has revealed that the Android 8.1 update will pack many of the Android Go memory management improvements, which means the Nokia 2's performance should only get better over time. That's not something you can often say about a low-end device.!
